S&W model 52 sight issue
S&W Model 52-2 38 automatic target pistol.
Has anyone had an issue with the rear sight adjustment not working properly on this gun? I can adjust it right, but I cannot adjust it left. I've gone drastic and adjusted as far left as it would go with no change to where it shoots. My dad bought it new back in the 70's but I dont think he fired more than 200 rounds through it, and there's no apparent damage to the site. It just doesnt seem to want to adjust left.
I also recently bought two new magazines for it through Midway USA. The baseplate is loose on both mags and gives play. Surely they are not manufactured that way now are they? I called the S&W parts dept and they said yes they were, but I cant believe they would make them like that. Can anyone else confirm?

the s&w model 52-2 does in fact have a bottom plate on their clip as you have discriibed. note the hole in the bottom, press thru the hole with a tooth pick or similar soft tool & slide the bottom off. this way you can disassemble for cleaning.
on your rear sight, top-right edge is a small set screw. use a .050 allen wrench and back it out 3 or 4 turns. now your rear sight will slide to the right out of it's dovetail. be careful not to lose the small spring under the sight. now try soaking the sight assy. in penetrating oil to free everything up. as a last resort, go to "www.smith-wesson.com" & contact them about repair or replacement. the good news, you won't have to send the whole gun.

I agree...thanks fellas. I'll give it a try this weekend. 0 -
Well, of course I had every Allen wrench except a .050. I couldnt get the sight to budge after loosening the screw, and didnt want to force the issue. However, that little spring you mentioned did show itself and nearly came out since I had the site adjustment all the way to the right. I had not noticed it before. SO I put everything back the way it was and will try it this weekend, weather permitting to see if it will respond to adjustment now. I think loosening the screw was enough to loosen the spring so that it will be responsive. I'll let you know...thanks 0 -
Worst comes to worst, remove the slide and soak it in kerosene for 3-4 days then try to remove the sight, if it still sticks try soaking for another 3-4 days.
Use a soak of penetrating oil would be better, but that could turn out to be a tad expensive for enough oil to soak the rear of the slide.
Of course there is the course of last resort ... gunsmith.[:D]
