You might want to checkout Kimber's line of 1911's, unless it must be a Colt. Kimber makes a fine pistol in various grades.

I cant tell you about the difference in technical terms, but I have both, and the national match is a more accurate firearm between the two I have. The NM are also more elusive to find. Both will cost you upwards from 800 to 1500. Dan Wesson also makes a decent target 45. 0 -
I agree with boltthrower, the NM is a more accurate hand gun. warcrob is also correct that the kimber is worth looking into if you do not need the colt name. My 2 cents [8D]

Thanks Guys, I will check into the Kimber too...But I
am curious, it seems everyone agrees the NM is a more
accurate pistol, what makes it so? Is the barrel different
than on a Government Model, is the machining better or
is the major factor that it has a softer trigger pull so
one is less apt to pull off target when squeezing the
trigger?

Trigger pulls can be adjusted on most all firearms, but yes having a softer pull helps the issue you described. I would imagine the NM has a more precision fitted barrel hood and lugs and have fitted a proper length match link and barrel bushing. The NM's throat and barrel feed ramp are probably better polished to insure positive feeding and its extractor and ejector are probably better tuned. Thats about as technical as I can get. I can tell you that I put a NM bushing on another none NM 45 I have. That puppy locked up solid tight, could not pull the slide back after I got it assembled. Had to take to a smith to remove it....thats how precisioned NM's are...wont fit over another barrel. 0 -
govt model has fixed sites and standard triggers, nm has adjustable. nm has hand fit bbl bushing to bbl and hand lapped slide to frame. nm has a trigger job and an adjustable backlash screw. nm has a polished feed ramp. nm has hand fitted mags to the gun. but in comparison, to a gun built from parts and fitted by an expert match gun builder, i can turn a govt model into a gun that will shoot circles around a factory nm gun. factory nm guns are more collectible today than they are valued for thier shooting. most die hard 45 shooters build their own. those with money buy advertisement and short change themselves. i'd rather have a gun built by a man i knew personally than a company who is only doing it to get a bottom line at tax time. company guns are designed with legality issues and must function under all conditions. match guns built specifically for a sport dont have to abide by lawyers rules. think it out and you will choose a custom built gun over that series 70 factory gun or even the kimber. hope it helps.
