    Is there a difference in a 7.62 x 54 and a 7.62 x 54R?
What is the meaning of the R ?

Sometimes, the R is just dropped...Same cartridge...

I have read that the "R" stands for "Russian".

Quote "Somehow government decided that the Constitutional Bill of Rights has become the Bill of "Suggested" Rights and are to be rationed to the citizens as the power elite sees fit"

7.62 x 54R was adopted as the standard Russian Military cartridge in 1891.

The "R" does NOT indicate Russia, it means "RIMMED".

This is the standard notation used when identifying METRIC cartridges. If there is a "R" suffix after the second series of numbers, it denotes that the cartridge is rimmed.

To further confuse the situation, other foreign nations have also used the 7.62x54 as thier military round or produced it for commercial purposes. Some of them refer to it as the 7.62x53R! When mesuring with calipers one will see some variances from arsenal to arsenal but the average in my experience is about 53.5 mm. A little confusing but all of these will most generally accept either desgnation with equal facility.
