Salvage,I don't think the 93's and 95's in 7mm will handle the higher chamber pressures of those cartridges. Maybe someone here can tell you more.

Ah..okay. Didn't realize that there was that big a pressure jump from the 7mm down to the 6mm Remington. Oh well...a nice 7mm is okay also.

Am thinking about building another rifle. And can get a Mod. 95 barreled action for about $80. Can get the action alone for $40.

Was just seeking info to help me make up my mind before I waded into building another one. [:)]

I've got a 93 in 7x57 that i built years back. I like the cartridge, i can load it for deer or ground squirrels.

The Chileno action is well made and strong, but it doesnt have the strength or the much improved gas escape system of the 98 action. It may be strong enough to handle a more modern round but with it not being as safe in case of a cartridge rupture or other mishap do you really want your face behind it on a regular basis?
You cant change it to 223 because the round is too small to fit in the magazine or bolt face without very expensive alterations,The 7X57 is an excellent round and I would leave it as chambered. If you reload ,you can load light varmint bullets and on up to heavy big game loads. The famous African hunter named Bell ,I believe, killed over 3000 Elephants with the 7 X 57.
If you want to rebarrel and build a rifle get a good 98 action. If you want a 223 go with a current factory action with the bolt face and magazine made for the smaller diameter.

I appreciate all the input. Built me a nice 25-06 out of a 98 about 30 years ago, and it does everything I want it to do. I do "roll my own" and guess I'm going to go the barreled action route and leave it in 7x57..probably make a nice deer rifle for my 18 month old grandson! LOL

Again, thanks to everyone for their input.

if you want a smaller caL. TRY THE .257 ROBERTS, just don't use the +p loads in the '95 action.
