Not all steel core ammo is considered AP... Winchester Fail-safe for instance. I'd think there'd be a velocity factor too that would exclude low power pistol and rifle rounds (such as .22lr) and most likely shotgun cartridges.

That's my 2 cents anyway, don't take it as fact...

Type of steel used, design of the projectile, and velocity are prime factors in making AP ammo.

Assaulting armored vehicles with a shotgun is not recommended as it will only aggravate the occupants of the vehicle[:D]

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

ting, soft lead balls, of whatever size, do not have the ballistic coefficient nor the hardness to penetrate anything but the lightest armor - say the sheet metal of the average car - at the closest range. As the above answers suggest, this is an entirely different beast. 00 Buck is about as far from AP as one can get, birdshot isn't even on the radar.

Velocity, velocity, velocity. I pushed copper plated and thin jacketed
lead 22s and 17s through 1/4" steel plate at short range, at 2500fps for the 22 & 3000fps for the 17. A 220 Swift with any bullet should do much better. I would guess 3/8" or greater.
The main gun on an Abrams tank shoots a sabotted missle at over 6000 fps that can penetrate an enemy tank turret at long range.
    A 50 cal bullet @ 2750fps will only gouge a 1/2" groove in a tank turret.

The depleted uranium pojectile helps in this case--just slightly!

the 50 cal was great in combat , we loved it as the guys still do today, if you were hiding behind a brick or concrete wall a few rounds and your hideout started to come apart....and quickly too! also that fifty if mounted and sighted good was very accurate in Vietnam Charley didnt have any steel that I remember so armor piercing was never thought of much...but the 50 could punch holes through some pretty good size trees and other stuff........
