Model 41
I recently acquired a Model 41 S&W. It's a real shooter(when it's
working properly).
I'm having problems with too many "duds" (perfect indentation of the firng pin in the rim of the cartridge, and i have tried different ammo) and more than occasionally
the gun ejects, loads a round but won't fire until I give the slide
a little push (which there doesn't seem to be any noticeable movement
forward) or I push up on the magazine and then the gun will fire.
Any of you guys ever run into this?
Thanks-Rong

Sounds like it is "gummed" up. Break it down, thoroughly clean with solvent, then use "stingers" and see how it works, if not a new firing pin might be in order. IMO. nambu 0 -
Some of these (like mine) wont work too good with cheap ammo, might be the problem.
These are real shooters, There are still a few world records held with the 41.0 -
sounds like a firing pin spring or a slide spring to me. time to call wolfe springs and put a spring kit in.

Actually, my 422 and 622's (a distant cheaper cousin to the 41) prefer COATED bullets. I shoot the cheap ones by Remington - Cyclones and Thunderbolts. It doesn't cycle as well with uncoated lead or copper bullets (reasons unknown). Ya might give it a try, but of course a strip and detailed clean can't hurt either. I would definately try both of these before starting to replace parts, my 422 probably has 25,000 rounds through it and it shows no sign of stopping anytime soon... 0 -
Give it a real good cleanig and try it, bet it will work fine then. 0 -
there is no comparison to a 41 and a 422. 41's are precision machines and have been perfected since the original one was created over 40 years ago. it has to be a mechanical malfunction. the 41 slide spring is a powerful item. and too, most owners of 41's are meticulus cleaners so concluding a 41 doesnt work because its dirty doesnt fit the pattern. but i will agree that every gun likes cetain bullets. i recommend he try cci green tags. my 41 will fire them just fine. just my 2 cents. 0 -
I agree with Bobski. Most 41's are target guns and you don't want to fire hi-vel ammo. I shoot 100 rounds per day thru mine and have never had that happen. I also know numerous people with this type gun and what you state is very rare. Try cleaning, then new spring, then the gunsmith. Something doesn't sound right if it is showing on the round. Bobski's a Bullseye guy so I'd listen to him strongly.
Best of luck, the 41's a great gun.0 -
Has it been dry fired alot? The chamber could be peaned slightly and not allowing the cartridge to fully seat in the chamber. Its an easy fix if it is peaned over from dry firing.

chris has a very good point. check your brass and see if there is a scratch the whole length down one side. if so, the tick on the chamber from dry fire damage is holding the bullet from going in. it requires EXACT SCIENCE to fix. there is a simple tool to fix this. brownells sells them. 0 -

There's some comparisons between them, not in accuracy or raw quality, but in the feel as well as some parts. Notice above I called the alloy 422/622's the 41's CHEAP COUSIN, I think that's pretty accurate and true.
I used to have a 41 (but it's been probably 10 years ago), and still have the 422 and 622's and while I don't remember much about the setup on the 41, in the hand they felt identical to me, just weighed a little more. Even the mags would interchange.
I don't remember however, did the 41 have the barrel on bottom and the action above it like the 422/622/2206's?0 -
Completely different design. The M41 has a stationary barrel that is above the slide.
Actually, the M422/622/2206 design is a retread of the pocket M61. Same features: aluminum frame, steel barrel insert, slide on top, remove front sight to take down, loose tolerances, etc.
