Stolen gun lists??

The list of stolen guns is maintained by the Dept of Justice. It can only be checked by police depts. If you have a good relationship with the local cops, you might find them willing to check the serial # for you, but most of us in urban areas won't be able to do that.

About all you can reasonably do is record the drivers license information of the seller, & keep that information permanently. If the seller refuses to let you do that, consider it a "flag on the play".

If you live in Ks. all you have to do is call the local police and give them the serial no. and they will check it for you I'm assuming most states would do the same to help find stolen guns

I have a couple of friends on the local PD and the Sheriff's office. They have always checked when I asked. Said that they have no problems with it, and sometimes it helps them clear up burglaries/robberies where guns were stolen.

A friend will post your bail. A good friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying, "man that was fun!"

If I give you the serial number of a pistol , can you tell me before I buy it , if it is listed as stolen?? Graci

Like everybody else has said. Contact your "most local" law enforcement agency (it would probably be your city police or county sheriff's office); odds are they will gladly run the serial numbers--make sure you have the make and model information in addition to the serial number.

I'll also say: Consider "passing" on any deals where you are concerned enough that you feel the need to have the gun checked. If you go to the police with the serial number and it comes back stolen, they are going to ask you where the gun is. (If you've already purchased it, they will want to know who you purchased it from.) Even if the person you are considering buying it from doesn't know it is stolen, they will not be happy with you when their gun is confiscated and they are questioned by the police. Yea, you'll be "doing a public service," but will be making "enemies"--and even potentially bring suspiscion on yourself--with little real benifit for you.

I suggest that you just buy firearms from people that you trust or from licensed dealers--IMO there are just too many potential headaches when buying from "suspicious" sources.
