Can someone give me the overall length of a M-1? Was Plainfield Machine in Dunellen, NJ a possible mfgr? I inherited this and am going by rough info and pictures. I need to know if it will fit into my Al. case - I'm flying to St. Pete next Wed. Is removing the stock much of a job?

Universals are pretty much junk when compared to the original WWII government carbines.
If you want a good reliable carbine, spend a little more and get an original.
I dont know how accurate the universals are compared to the originals, but the reliability and overall quality of the "GI" carbines are much better.
By the way, for the most part the parts are NOT interchangeable between the two types of carbines.

WHAT WOULD BE THE BETTER M-1 OUT OF THE MANY MANUFACTURERS DURING THAT ERROR?

Actually, all the government contract carbines were made to the same specs, so they are all of equal quality.

The thing that sets them apart is the number of carbines made by each contractor. The fewer made by a company the more they are worth to collectors.

    Carbines were made by the:
Inland Division of General Motors-- 2,635,000
    International Business Machine
    346,500
    Irwin Pedersen Corp
    30,000
    National Postal Meter
    413,000
    Quality Hardware
    360,000
    Rock-ola
    228,000
    Saginaw Steering gear
    517,000
    Standard Products
    247,000
    Underwood
    545,600
    Winchester
    828,000

You always want to refer to it as an "M1 carbine", not an "M1"; when you say "M1" most folks think you mean "M1 rifle".

Any of the USGI M1 carbines will be fine. The most commonly seen are Inland Div of General Motors, as they produced the most. Look for one that was arsenal rebuilt, generally available in the $500-800 range. Avoid any with "import" markings.

WHERE WOULD I FIND THE IMPORT MARKINGS?TOWARDS THE END OF THE BARREL?

Import markings can be anywhere on the barrel or receiver; they may even be below the "wood" line, so you must always remove the action from the stock.

Not that there aren't some good imports. It's just that MOST were used by the Korean army, which used them well & abused them often.
