im looking into buying a Romanian WASR-10, are these good, reliable rifles like other ak models?? if not what is better for under $450, Russian?? Yugo??

Is a WASR-10 any good? I know it is an AK variant, but don't know much about it. It has the one piece butstock with the built in pistol grip with a big cutout in the middle. Is it legal to change this to a regular butstock and pistol grip? What other modifications can I make legally? 0 -
Well, it seems no one knows much about this one. I have found that it is supposed to take single stack mags, but has been modified to take double stacks. I went ahead and bought it. Package deal with 4 hi cap mags(steel romanian), 300 rds ammo, and a ruger 10/22 with the greenish black laminated stock, and a Bsa scope. $400 for it all. did I get a good deal?? 0 -
Wasr 10 hi cap is Romanian. Virtually identical to the venerable Romanian Sar -1. A fine stamped civie AK that will give your a lifetime of fun and satisfactory service. $400.00 bones for the package you mentioned is a steal, you should be feeling guilty.[:D]

I would feel guilty since it is a person I work with that made me the deal. I think he thought that $400 was too much for the WASR and the accessories, so when he brought it to me I was informed that he was throwing the other in on the deal. I was afraid to ask too many times if he was sure, because I sure didn't want him to change his mind. Both rifles are in like new condition too.I just don't really like the stock on the WASR, so does any one know if I can change it to a regular AK stock with a pistol grip?? 0 -

It sounds like you have one of the earlier WSARs with a "draganov" (sp?) style stock; to change to the standard pistol-grip stock legally you have to add a number of U.S. made parts--it is a legal "technicality" thing, but important.
I'm not sure what the specific parts are that need to be replaced with U.S. made ones so that you can then add the regular AK pistol-grip stock, but someone else here might be able to help you--or you might be able to find the information/parts online; kits have been sold to do what you want to do.0 -
From what everyone has told me the Romanian AK's have not been sitting in warehouses for ten years. The reason we are seeing them today is because they were imported as parts kits and assembled in the US with enough US parts to get by the ban.

Century Arms, for some reason, is no longer importing the SAR1, I believe the Romanians upped the price on them. Century is now importing the WASR10 with that thumbhole stock. I believe Century realized that most of it's customers were changing the stocks on the SAR1 anyway & that it would be more cost effective to sell the guns with the thumbhole stocks. I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't have a huge inventory of thumbholes stocks and figured this would be a great way of getting rid of them or they found a source of thumbhole stocks that was cheaper than the standard stocks.
Don't believe any of the crap you hear about SAR1 rifles being banned from future importation. It's about the money!

A WASR-10 is a post-ban Romanian semi-automatic AKM (aka AK-47) clone. This version of the rifle has a thumbhole stock and can accept Hi-capacity magazines because the receiver was milled out. The end of the barrel usually has a nut welded over it, but has no threads. It uses the standard AK-47 7.62*39 cartridge. The fit and finish of this rifle is good; this rifle has some of the best looking Blonde wood and some minor machining marks. I put the US made OD green extended length stocks on my SAR1, makes the rifle look much better.
I've been tempted to buy another SAR1, they go for $400 to $425 in my neck of the woods but are getting harder to find, if I could find a WASR10 hicap at a lower price I might go for it.
Bottom line, jump on that deal!

Yesterday I ordered a WASR- 10 from Classic Arms. It comes with the draganov stock, the original military stock , cleaning kit. 2 hi-cap mags, and manual. Paid $295.95, with $11 of that for shipping. You can buy one with the dragonov stock and accesssories but just 1 hi-cap mag for $260. Everything I have read about these have been positive and I don't see how their going to get cheaper, so I jumped on board. Check them out at Classicarms.com. I'll try to give a report when mine comes in but working the next 28 days straight don't see much chance on getting to try it out. Dandy 0 -

Thanks dandy, that site sold me on the SAR1. I bought mine for $425 and have since probably put another $400-500 into with accesories and crap. [:D][:D][:D]
