Differences between muzzle brake & flash suppresor

Flash supressors function is to shield the shooter from the muzzle flash, so the shooter can continue to see in low light situations. Contrary to popular belief, they do not hide the flash from the target.

Brakes function is to reduce the recoil of the firearm.

Currently, brakes must be approved by the ATF to be considered brakes if they are used on guns that look like assault weapons. I don't think a current brake can shield any of the flash to the point the shooter will not suffer from the blinding a flash hider is intended to reduce.

    Another way to put it.

The flash suppressor shields the shooter from the muzzle blast.

The muzzle brake directs the muzzle blast back toward the shooter.

A bud has a Bushmaster with their muzzle brake and it really rings my ears with muffs. My 223 bolt action is far more enjoyable to shoot.

for the record....the best muzzle flash suppressor ever made was for the BM59. it would not expose film on stop action photography at night.

The answers were correct, but some muzzle brakes also are directed to reduce muzzle climb as well as recoil during rapid or auto fire. Muzzle brakes are also known as compensators in some configurations.

case in point...the BM59. it was both a brake and supressor. best ever made....and it launched rocket grenades from it as well AND it had a bayonet lug!

my understanding is that a muzzle brake and a compensator is the same thing but the comp. is for a pistol or a revolver, whereas the muzzle brake is for rifles, but both serve for the same purpose.... tomato-toemoto.

bobski almost sounds like he's trying to draw me into something, with all the BM59 talk. He must know I have a couple. The BM59 brake/flash hider/grenade launcher is called a tri-compensator so the term compensator has been applied to muzzle devices on 7.62X51 NATO battle rifles. He is very much correct, the BM59 tri-compensator is the best. Not only does it hide the flash, some claim it almost pushed the muzzle down. And it launches any standard NATO grenade. Or dummy grenade, if you are into adult lawn darts. I'll see if I an find a mpeg of it in operation, I have one around...

Here ya go, a clip of a full auto BM59 in action. Notice how controlable it is compared to, say, the M-14. Maybe, just maybe, the M-14 would be the best battle rifle ever made if it had a Beretta Tri-compensator. But I'm afraid my vote still has to go with the BM59. This clip is worth the wait downloading....
