Cartridge Collection
A gentleman brought me pictures of his cartridge collection which consisted of about 500 calibers, over 800 types dating from 1820 to 1970's. It is impressive. He also made a movie to go with it he called "The History and Development of the Modern Cartridge". He wants to sell it but has no idea what it is worth. He would like someone to continue the collection. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mike,
This sounds as though it is largely commercial loadings; if it includes exotic military items, that will make an analysis more difficult, but from your description I doubt it. Make a list of what is there, skipping the standard pistol cartridges and common loadings of standard rifle cartridges. Virtually no commercial ammo since WW2 is worth much. Concentrate on the pre-1900 items: the BP rounds with paper patched bullets, rimfires larger than .42 and patent ignition items. The larger (.500 & up) British express cartridges have some significant value as well. This is a broad generality; a few modern items are valuable and some early things are rather common, but it is a reasonable approximation and will save you some work. At a guess, this will bring you down to around 200 items and from there you should be able to find someone to give you an appraisal. I may be able to do it if time is not an issue for you or your customer.
