I think it was made in the late 1950's.

    Mfg. 1966

BB for 98% is $300 and for this area of Ohio $300-325 is basically market, even w/ original box, papers and tools the top end is right around $350.

C-man; thanks. Down here they're more like $400-$500. If fact the dealer I used for the transfer had one in his shop at the time but wouldn't back down from $500. I end up buying more guns on auction sites because the shops in Central Fla. tend to charge top dollar.

My 14-3 was made in 1966 and it came under the seat of a beater car I bought for 250 bucks, Had the numbers run through State Police and it came back clean...that was 1982. Best car purchase i ever made! The K-38's are indeed nice guns; mine has case colored target hammer and trigger too and the best SA/DA action of any of the 4 Smiths I own.Saw one like yours in about 95% condition the other day for $340 which in Illinois seems to be about going rate. Does not sound like the BEST deal I've ever heard of but if you think it's a good price for your area then why not...everything is geographical on this stuff anyway. As long as you didn't pay too much for the transfer <$50 you're likely ok. Have fun with her!

Not a bad price at all. You have to consider when it was made. 1966 was in the prime of Smith and Wesson. The quality and workmanship on those guns far exceeds anything made since. I wouldn't touch a smith made after the early 70's. A K38 might go for $300 most places, but there's a big difference between a K38 made in 1966 and one made in 1980. People who know will bid that gun up because they want one that was well made, and not a huge collection of tool marks that weren't polished out and a finish that doesn't match (barrel and frame).
