angle of the shoulder, case capacity (grs of water), "wildcat" or "improved" cartridge designed by LYSLE KILBOURN. slightly higher velocity, slightly longer range. best regards, mike.

    Hello nyforester...

It does slightly more than change the angle of the shoulder. A standard Hornet cartridge is a tapered bottle-neck cartridge. After fire forming it in a K-Hornet chamber, it is no longer tapered, and it has a neat 35 degree shoulder. A standard Hornet headspaces on the catridge rim, whereas the K-Hornet headspaces on the case shoulder. The K-Hornet has about an 11% gain in case capacity, and in my Winchester single-shot (a reworked Model 87 Winder Musket with a 28" barrel), it shoots quite a bit faster. With my loads, it sends a 45 gr. HP downrange at a nominal 3100 fps. I personally do not notice any difference in the generated noise or recoil (not that either ever had much recoil). Check out the following link to look at the different case specs.

Bert, as always is on top of the topic here! I have one reservation with the K unless you are an avid handloader...no major ammo maker produces the cartridge as it is a widcat proposition so you may not be able to get ammo for the K. Also, I am not entirely sure accuracy would not be adversely affected shooting regular Hornet from a Hornet-K chambered gun. Decisions, decisions!

When I fire-form new brass (using standard Remington 22 Hornet ammo), it shoots about 4" high, and the groups open up to about 3" (from sub 1" groups) at 100 yards. The 22 K-Hornet is purely a reloader's cartridge (it is not made by any of the ammo manufacturers that I am aware of).

perhaps "BLOWN OUT" would be a helpful adjective to describe the differance in case dimensions between the 2 cartridges. best regards, mike.

It looks like the 1947 Landis variation of the K-Hornet might have the greatest volume. The Neider Improved case looks OK too.
Of the five variations, which is the standard and to your knowledge is there a best version ?
How much 2400 will your version hold?

    Hello v35...

I am not sure which variation of the K-Hornet has the greatest case volume, and I do not know if there is a "standard" variation. My Winchester has the 35 degree shoulder, and I load it with 11.9 grains of 2400 (I don't know how much it might actually hold though).
