AR15 "UPPER", preban or post ban?
I have a colt 7.62x39 upper. How do I know if it was prior to or after the ban?

Features such as a flash suppresor or bayonet lug will indicate if it is a pre or post ban configeration upper. However you can not mount a pre ban upper on any post ban lower no matter when the upper was actually produced. The lower is the restrictive part of any AR type weapon. A pre ban lower can have a pre or post ban upper on it, the reverse is not true. 0 -
It is a carbine, with a flash suppressor, no bayonet lug as the sight/bayonet lug would be too far back to use a bayonet.

Are you certain it is a flash suppresor and not a muzzel break? Either way if the barrel is threaded and has a flash suppresor that will count as one of the "evil" features leading towards a pre ban configuration. If the flash suppersor is actually a muzzel break and is perminatly attached, then the upper has none of the "evil" pre ban features. Post ban rifles are allowed to have up to two of the evil features, pre ban can have them all. The following are the features that count as evil: Flash suppresor (threaded barrel at the muzzel end), pistol grip, detachable magazine, bayonet lug, collapsable / folding stock, or a grenade launcher. 0 -
I'm pretty sure it's a flash supressor. It has 6 slots going all the way around.

That does sound like a flash suppresor. You can always remove it and add perminatly attach a muzzel break if you want to put the upper on a post ban lower. Or you can wait until September and see if the Assault Weapons Ban expires, then pre and post designations will be a thing of the past -hopefully. 0 -
Thanks much hughes.
