Is there a differnce between a M4 and an AR-15?
Sorry I'm a newbie to guns. Is the M4 a military/Colt designation of the AR-15? Are all AR-15's the same gun? Cloned by different manufacturers? I went to www.colt.com and check out the M4. Damn she is purdy. How can I get one? Thanks much.

The M4 is a military designation for an M16 with a special profile barrel. Look up the Bushmaster and Olympic web sites to see features of the different models. The AR15 will accept the M4 barrel and be made to look like the M4 without the full auto feature. 0 -
in a nut shell, the ar-15 is the civilian model of the m-4. but most inportantly m-4 is select fire (semi-automatic, 3 round burst or fully-automatic) while the ar-15 is only a semi-automatic, plus a few other things that are different between them. but they both look the same

Thanks for all the help. So is it possible to buy a M4 from Colt? Cause them is sooo purdy. 0 -
Isn't the M4 also the variant with the collapsable buttstock? I was thinking the M4 was the same as the M-16, but with the different (collapsable) buttstock.
I've never owned one, and doubt I ever will, but that's what I understood anyway...0 -
The M4 is the shorty version of the AR15/M16. It has a 14.5" barrel, short handguards, and has a "step" in the profile on the barrel to accept the M203 launcher assy. Your non-SBR M4's will have a short muzzlebrake permanently added to the M4 barrel to meet the 16" BATF reqs. The standard AR15/M16 will have a 20" barrel

You can put on a 16" M4 profile barrel but the collapsible stock can only go on a preban rifle. The Bushmaster catalog/website will give you all your choices. 0 -
depending on your state of residence, and how much you are willing to spend, you can have less than 16" barrel. I personally wouldnt go through the money and trouble for an inch and a half shorter barrel tho. 0 -
You can't get one you live in california there is no legal way. You are awful persistant about this topic even though you have been told this before.
That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die!0 -
The Colt M4 barrel must be used with a Colt M4 upper, the real M4 is only made by Colt, others just have the same look. The military M4 is 14.5" barrel, law enforcement types are 16.1" barrels. At this time you would have to have a preban AR type lower to install it on. There is a dealer in Florida that sells complete uppers with 16.1 inch barrels and the sliding stocks. Colt does make a postban type of M4, but wait to see if/when the ban sunsets and a semi-auto version with 16 inch barrel will probably be available. If you live in Cal. then you must already have a AR type registered, if it is preban then you are set, if it is postban then you will need to wait for the ban to sunset.
If you are in Cal. then you would have to use a Cal. legal lower and check with AG to see what features you can use.

Just a note on another difference between the M4 and M16: The M4 selector switch goes Safe, Semi, and Full-auto; the M16A2 gives you Safe, Semi, and 3-round-burst. (Older M16s had Full-auto instead of burst mode.) The rifling twist rate may also be different, but they even changed that between versions of the M16.
The AR-15 is the civilian version of the M16 (and, IIRC, was around before it became adopted as the M16). It comes in a lot of flavors and manufactures, from Armalite (the original), to Bushmaster; from 16"-barrel "Shorty" versions to 24" heavy-barrel varminter guns; and from "traditional" aluminum receiver construction to polymer lowers.0
