My new remington 870
Hello all,
I just got my first shotgun. I bought it very very lightly used. What I bought was a remington 870. I paid a good price for it over my other options so I don't think I got screwed. I was wondering though what it's actual worth is. Here are the details.
synthetic stock
pump action
20 or 26 barrel, fully rifled (i'll have to check, can't remember)
accepts 2 3/4 or 3 in
the metal is not the rough style
the rear sight is made to accept a scope, like the deer slug model
there is no front sight
the reciever is engraved by remington, i can't remember what the engraving is called but it's very lavish
also, the trigger is gold
there are really no markings on the gun to identify the model. within the engravings it has remington model 870 but that is it. I have no seen another one even close to the same as this. I can get the serial number if it is more help.
If you don't know, do you have any ideas as to how I can find out?
thanks,
Chris

a little more info,
on the grip section of the stock, on the bottom, there is a plastic piece that has the letters SF on it. I think that those letters stand for "Special Field". I went to remington but they give no numbers or anything for an 870.
thanks for any help you guys can give.
thanks,

i sorta sounds like 870 rifle deer gun but i didnt think any of them came with synthetic stock. i dont think any 870 came with blued finish and synthetic stock. is it a rifled barrel? 0 -
yes the barrel is fully rifled.
Sorry but for some reason when it comes time to actually write the terms I can't ever remember what they are. It may not be an actual "blued" finish, I just can't remember what it is called. The gun looks like the deer gun you are talking about, but the metal is not rough, and the reciever has the engravings on it.
I think it a model called "Special Field" , but I can't find a picture of one anywhere.
Anyone have any information or know where I can find a picture of "Special Field"
Thanks for the reply Jake

My guess is that it started as a fancy Wingmaster that someone added a cantilever barrel and synthetic stocks to.
The value based on what I've read is in the receiver. If it's going to be a shooter, I'd keep the barrel and stock and sell the receiver alone. The current set-up might scare away a collector.
based on the engraving, i.e condition, who did it etc. the range could be probably $500 and up for the receiver alone. If it's machine cut, the price could be far lower.
So much for a definitive answer.
Can you post a pic?0 -

it's not a wingmaster, i've seen those before and know what they look like.
the barrel i believe is nickel plated.
does anyone know how i can run the serial number, like you would the vin on a car? I e-mailed remington but have yet to get an answer. The barrel and reciever mnatch perfectly.
The engraving work to it was done by remington, or someone is very very good.
What more info do you need?
thanks,

I payed $150 for my used Rem 870 12ga last year and same price for one in 20ga the year before. they are both Express Models and in real good condition, no rust and a crisp finish.......however the stocks do have one or two field scratches on them.......down here that's about the going price used........john.......
....If you have to shoot...SHOOT!...don't talk!0 -
you would know if the barrel was nickel plated![:D] 0
