Both are good shooters, but I believe that the SAR is a little more rugged.

Optics options are a little more straight forward w/ more choices for the Ruger.

At 300 yds and in they pretty much hang together on accuracy, although for hunting I would not recommend more than around 150 yds.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

Either would be ok out to 50-60 yds, after that(on average) the groups open up too much to consistantly provide good shot placement. Yes this caliber will effective kill a deer out to ~150yds but there are much better choices out there. If you stick with the 7.62x39, one of the better SKS's would be a better choice. Also for just a little more than the cost of a new mini-30, you could get a Browning BAR Composite in .308, or look for a Polytech/Norinco M14/s. I just went down this route with a mini-30 and got rid of it as quick as I could. Most guns can out shoot the user but the mini's can not.
