Unique AR-15 Conversion Kit
Picked up an AR kit today unlike any I've seen. Familiar with most commercial and military, but this one is different.
It has a firing pin spring. No maker but a four digit serial. Roll pins used throughout except on the urethene buffer at the rear which has a phillips screw.
Has a bleed off gasport on the side where the gas tube feed into the "carrier" just like a real bolt. Has a spring assy at the rear to force the unit forward into the AR-15 action. Now for the really weird. Has a full 30 round size white nylon magazine that holds ten rounds of .22.
Anyone know who could be the maker of this? It may even be British as they overengineer everything and this is really overengineered.
Thanks

You have what I call the "Air Force" Conversion Unit. All are serial-numbered as far as I know. I have one in the 6800 range and one in the 9500 range as I recall, so, depending on where the numbering started, there could have been a fair number made. I think I may have a manual somewhere, but have not looked for decades since I bought my first one from Sarco in the 1970s. I therefore cannot tell you the maker or official nomenclature.
In my opinion, it is the absolute best conversion unit for the AR-15/M16 and clones. It has a rifled chamber insert instead of a smooth bore like all the others. It is truly gas-opearted instead of the usual blowback. The magazines are easy to load and feed very reliably, much better than those skinny stick magazines used with the other styles, but unfortunately only hold ten rounds. It is the only conversion unit that locks the bolt open on the last shot. It will operate in semi-automatic mode only in an M16.
Once you shoot it, you will become a fan like I am. Magazines are hard to find. I only had one with one of my kits and three with the other until I stumbled onto a guy with six new, sealed-in-foil-packages magazines for sale. He did not know what he had.
Overengineered? I think not. Properly engineered would be my feeling.0 -
Judge,
You called this one very right. The chamber insert is rifled. Compared to all the others I've seen it is very well engineered indeed. It does function quite well in the two weapons I have tried it in. If you do happen to come across a maker's name, please pass it on to me.
Thanks,
