    Hello rifflemagnet...

Just where did you get that "1200" number from? I can tell you this much... it is not anywhere near accurate. As for the actual number of Model 1894 "Rifles" that were made with non-standard length barrels, that information can not ever be accurately determined (the original factory ledgers held by the Cody Firearms museum unfortunately end at serial number 353,999 (see the following link - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/popup_WinchesterRecords.cfm).

Additionally, the standard length barrel for a Model 1894 "Rifle" changed from 26" to 24" a few years before the "Rifle" was discontinued (in 1924). I personally have seen several hundred authentic 1894 "Rifles" with non-standard barrel lengths from 18" up to 36". The most common special order length seems to be 30" followed closely by 20" (apparently many people wanted a "carbine" length rifle with the octagon barrel versus buying a standard Carbine with a 20" round barrel). The rarest length I have encountered was a 19", half octagon barrel (and yes, it lettered that way). Youe are correct in that 32" is quite rare (as is 34"). Winchester only offered extra length barrels in 2" increments, but would provide shorter than standard barrels in 1" increments... odd, but true.

Regardless of the factory records not surviving above serial number 353,999, I can assure you that there were a LOT more than just 1200 "rifles" made with non-standard barrel lengths.
