well recoil is not as bad as you would imagine... i've shot the ruger super redhawks in 454 and 480 and the grip designs on both of them are terrible... the bfr does have the kick to it but it's comfortable and controllable more so than the ruger

I'm jealous!!! I want to get one to have as a companion carry gun for my Marlin 1895G. I would have to assume that any of the factory loads for the springfield (low pressure) rifle in the lighter bullet weights would be a good choice although these things are supposed to be able to handle much higher pressures than are developed by these rounds. When handloading I would likely use gas checked lead bullets in the 300 to 350 gr. range over IMR 4198(or similarly quick burnrate powders). I almost always use magnum primers in low capacity powder loads of this type to insure better and more complete ignition. The 10 inch barrel you have is pretty long for a handgun but not long enough to insure a complete burn with slower powders I believe. I would NOT go with anything quicker than that as pressures and load variations become a bit twitchy! Did I mention I'm jealous?!?! Have fun with 'the beast'!

Kydster... dont be jealous... go getcha one... LOL i wasnt big on handcannons till i bought one after much deliberation. I dont regret spending the first penny on it .... so far i'm shooting 2-3" 5 shot groups off a bag at 100 yds, i havent had time to play much with my loads but so far 49.9 grs of imr 4198 is getting the job done, get back with me in about a week and i'll let you know the velocities on the 300gr sierra's i'm sending down the pipe

I.m about 200 lbs. and the 500 Smit I shot nearly gave me a Hindu push button birthmark betwixt my eyes; and that was with both hands!! I think the next size bigger comes on wheels! HA!HA! I like the big hand cannons but think I'll stick to the BFR 45/70 or my real dream gun, a Century revolver fr: Evansville Indiana! They weere really, REALLY cool looking and pretty much hand fnished one at a time; works of art they were! As for the load you were using in the BFR?!?! Almost 50 grains of IMR 4198?!?! I use a gas checked lead bullet of 455 gr over 35 to 39 gr. of IMR 4198 in my Marlin Guide gun and at the top of that chart it will just about make a potato chip out of an 8 inch square 1/4 inch steel boiler plate and very nearly penetrate it at point of impact! Granted you are using 10 inches less barrel and a 300 gr, pill but I'll bet that it is pretty flipping spectaculer!! Would love to hear what kind of chrono results you get when you go out. I wonder if you are burning all the powder and also would be interested to see if you get much of a fps drop off if you dropped off about 5 to 8 grains? Even if I'm proved right on that one I bet the 50 grains would put on quite the show with all the powder burning up in that beachball size muzzle flash!! That is what makes handloading this old war horse of a round so cool..lots of different loads for lots of different kinds of pistols/rifles! E-mail me if your hands are not too numb from the recoil HA!HA! devos9018@aol.com

well Kydster... the jury is in ... 300gr sierra jhp being pushed by 49.9 grs of imr 4198 out of my 10" bfr gives you a 10 shot average of 1749.4 fps... not to shabby for a 300 gr pill, considering my case pressure is still under 35,000 and i'd almost venture to say 31,00... i shot a few to chrony them today ... gonna toy somemore with it later....
