If you're gonna get anything in a .44 mag, get one with a 6 inch barrel. The 6 inch shoots and handles much better, without the harder kick and muzzle blast you get with a 4 inch barrel.

    Longer is always better....hmmmmmmm.

Are you ruling the S&W mod 29, .44mag out of the equation or do you already own one??
If not it is a gun to think about adding to your collection. I have three, a 4"nickel, a 6" and a 8 3/8" blued, all mfg in the seventies.

If you serious on a Python, I have one in 357 mag SN 31192, NEW, 2 gold figures on frame, six miniature gold figures on cylinder flutes, ivory grips (real), Engraved by A. Griebel. $$$$ email me if interested.

I do agree Rebel James to go with a 6" whatever brand revolver.

I am not a big .44 fan. Having said that I have owned two. The Smith 629 classic 5". great gun but sold it. I currently have a Anaconda 6" ported. Fantastic gun. I kept it over the Smith because the trigger pull was better and the longer barrel being ported cut down on recoil and I was more accurate with it. The Python is the yardstick for all the other .357 magnums out there so if you are going to have a revolver, thats the one to have in your inventory.

I have the 6" anaconda absolutely love it, shoots and feels great, nothing against the smith's but they are the most uncomforatable .44 to shoot for me sometimes downright painful. They have a tendency to bite me right in the crotch of my thumb ouch that stings. No problems with the anaconda great gun would recomend you get one.

The Python is the best by far. The workmanship on the anaconda is not even close to that of the python. Neither is the price. I own a python, anaconda & a Smith 29. All 6" bbls. The anaconda is more comfortable to shoot, but the workmanship and accuracy are better with the Smith. I think that I am going to have to replace the rear sights on the anaconda, as it doesn't seem to hold true. The anaconda is pre-drilled and tapped for scope mounts, if that is a bonus to you. As mentioned before, whatever you buy, get the 6" bbl.

I traded in a well used S&W 686 Plus for a used 6" Python. The shop had the Python priced just under $600 and the serial number dates it to 1961. As any Python collector will tell you, "it really isn't a collectible unless it is NMIB or MIB." Once you shoot a Python, you will understand why they are the best .357 made. I'm a shooter, not a collector, so I really look for used QUALITY firearms at a FAIR price.

As far as .44 Magnum's, I own a 6" 629 Classic DX. These are no longer produced and came out of the S&W Custom Shop. This model is far superior to any Anaconda and used they are available for around $500-$600.

    Just my opinions.

    Good Luck

I have a 6 inch Python and a 6 inch Anaconda. Highly recommend both. As others said, do not over look the SW29 and go with a 6 inch unless you plan to carry. Good luck.

I carried a 4" Python as a service revolver back in the '80's. Best service revolver ever made. I'd still be carrying it if we didn't have to carry issued Glocks. I do qualify with it each year as a "back up" gun. Funny, it always seems to be with me on robbery stake outs 'just in case.'[:D][:D][:D]
