If your looking around $200.00 or so I say get a Rossi 971 4" in stainless but they also sell the 642(I Think) 2" snub .357.I have one and it is a great revolver at any price and for what I paid it is flawless.Another option would be to look for an old Ruger Security Six in .357 Magnum.I say a .357 is a great first gun.It was my first and only revolver.

also keep your eye out for some of the older s&w's. some of them go for a few hundred bucks, and are some of the best shooting guns.

if its your 1st gun I would go with the 4 " barrel with adjustable sights , learn how to shoot it before trying a small 2" barrel gun out
look at the used market for
Ruger Security Six , Service six, police six, GP100
    Smith and Wesson models 10,15, 19, 64,65, 656, 686
also Taurus or Rossi but 1 st choice would be a S&W or Ruger

Taurus offers good value revolvers and so does Rossi (which has been bought by Taurus). Ruger Security Six or SP-101 are other options. And of course Smith & Wesson.

If your patient you can find any of the brands mentioned at or under $300, and a little more frequently for $300-350.

Don't let price be your sole driver. You've indicated that you want this to initially be your carry piece and perhaps a backup piece in the future. So with your safety/life or tthe safety/life of others at issue ... don't go cheap!

I have many handguns now. My first one was a 25 year old S & W Model 10 with a 4" barrel that I bought for $200.00. I still enjoy shooting it as much as any other pistol.

There is no reason why you could not use a 2" barrel revolver to learn to shoot, you don't need a 4" barrel or adjustable sights.

My 2cents, The first handgun I bought leagally was a ruger security six .357 for $179.00 new and was not what I wanted after looking at all the toys in the store, but a local officer shopping that day convinced me to save money on the first one. After shooting it and learning the basics of shooting I was glad that I bought it. I own several fine firearms now almost 30 years later and wish I still had that one. Now if it were up to me to do it again I would go with the 4" Python (which was about $165.00 more at the time) money permitting. Look at the gun shop and wait for a deal, if your in a hurry the Taurus, Rossi or even a Charter arms might serve you well. Good luck in finding that perfect one just for you.

Most shooting ranges offer rental guns for you to try. If that is an option I strongly recommend it. My "first" pistol was a Beretta 92FS. This was pre-ban all the way back to 1994. No reason, just fell in love with it at the gun shop. It is a fine gun, and I love it and will carry it when I get my MO permit and when it is applicable. However, I recently got "into" wheel guns and I love my Taurus 650 CIA 2" .357. That will be my primary carry piece and my practice shows I can handle it fairly well. I'll not make many 50 yard shots with it, but at self-defense distances I like what I see.

Like in the NFL, defense is the key.

I purchased a Ruger Security Six new back in the early 1970's.. It's a great pistol. Shoot cheap 38's for pleasure, load her up with 357's for home security. It'll last a lifetime (particularly if you're as old as I am), and you always have a reliable manufacturer if you need service. You can't go wrong.. Best Wishes, PX1[:)]

Go with what feels comfortable to you. Go to your local gunshop and put your hands on different types, ask alot of question and listen.
