10/22 Barrel Fouling
I took my 10/22 out this weekend and put about 300rds of winchester xpert through it, the kind that comes from walmart in the 500 rd box, and when I went to pull a bore snake through the barrel, it was so fouled that I couldn't even get the snake to go throught the barrel. After getting home I had a difficult time getting a brush through it for the first few passes. I've never experienced this kindof problem with any other brand of ammo. Any suggestions on something that would help disolve the lead deposits in the barrel or caused it to foul up so badly? Thanks

you might consider using a different ammunition, or cleaning at more regular intervals while shooting. 0 -
The Expert brand of ammo used is outside lubed with a paraffin based wax. The hot gas from the burning powder, along with the friction of the bullets passage, melts the paraffin and builds up in the bore. As the bore fouls more wax is laid down with each shot. The previous post is correct. Either clean more often (every 50 rounds) or change ammo since different lubes are used in the non-promotional ammo lines. The little differance in cost is certainly worth the time saved cleaning, wear on the rifle and accuracy. In my area the cost between Expert and higher quality ammo is $2 to $3 a carton (10 box brick), hardly worth all the extra effort.
Storage of .22 ammo is as inportant as the type. Keep the ammo in the house not in your hot tool box or vehicle.

I agree with the posters above. I have a Ruger 10/22 and I think you need to change brands of ammo or clean it every 50-100 rounds, maybe just clean the bore a little while shooting. I now use CCI stinger most of the time with no problems at all.
