Two things here. I personally think it would be OK for personal protection. Elmer Keith was of the opinion that the 22 mag killed cougars very efficiently. There are many that might be better but if that's all you have, practise with it until you are comfortable using it. Rule #1 in a gun fight, have a gun.
Second thing. That wallet holster, if it's waht I think you have is just a little on the illegal side. I'm sure some one on here can shed a litle more light on that, but I would NOT carry the pistol in that holster. Somehow our government, which is looking out for our best interests has made it against the law to carry a pistol in a wallet holster.

Get a pump shotgun, forget about that derringer. Just my 2 cents.

Mr. Christ may be correct about the holster.

If it is the kind that allows the gun to fire without being removed from the holster (i.e., there is a hole for your trigger finger it), the gun & holster combination must be registered with the ATF, & a $200 "making" fee must be paid. Possession of both without a federal permit is a violation of law. It's considered to be in the same category as "belt buckle" & "attache case" guns.

This gun is not good for home defense, as it is difficult to fire accurately. Recoil makes it jump in your hand, & it must be regripped for the second shot. On the other hand, if it doesn't kill the perp, the tremendous boom & foot-long muzzle flash will scare the heck out of him.

ferrous, those guns were designed to break contact, not defend a home. wallet derringers are best served for card games, jogging, or walks in central park. get a 38 for the home. otherwise, just make sure those derringers dont go off in your hand. keep the muzzle clear when you close and load it.
