anybody know any good tricks to remove this stuff from a rifle and the stock without damaging the finish? 0 -
just take the stock off and degrease the crap out of it. now is the time to get chummy with a mechanic or somebody with a parts washer.[:D] 0 -
Take all hardware off and buttpad. Wrap stock in aluminum foil to catch drippings. Dont worry about the crossbolt. Preheat oven to 350 put stock in as far as it will go for 10 minute increments turning stock around every time. Wipe off between increments. After the cosmo is gone sand and refinish with boiled linseed oil. Several coats allowing ample time to dry in between coats. Buff out with 0000 steel wool.
This method worked great for me and it wasnt very messy like some of the other ways.

Brake Parts cleaner, Tire cleaner, Engine degreaser, Oven Cleaner all seem to work pretty well.
I have cleaned up too many of these and my new standing method is this. (Lazy easy way too)
Strip gun completely throw all small metal parts in a can of gas let sit two days swishing the can around everynow and then take out and wipe them down use carb cleaner to spray out cracks and holes
Lay stock in AL foil trough spray it down with foaming oven cleaner let it sit a hour flip it over spray down again let it sit and hours flip and spray down one more time let it sit over noght take it out side an hose it off hang to dry. Will need to refinish with something after this as will remove ALL oil and fiish from the stock
clean the barrel with BLUE WONDER several times.
Reasmbly oil it up pretty good grap a couple hundred round go to the range fire about a hundred rounds through it at fast speed you will be suprised how much grease runs out of places
Make sure and clean under sights, gas port, gas cylinder,
Check gas port before and after first shooting to see how loose it is often after first trip to the range a little dremmel work is required on the gas prot if you want it to work
If force ain't work'n... Your not use'n nough of it.
I know the spelling is bad but guess what I DON'T CARE0 -
DOES KEROSINE WOKS TOO? 0 -
Politically incorrect solution.....Gasoline. Careful you don't get an unintentional fire going but that's the fastest way I know of. Do it outdoors, on gravel (makes that cleanup easier) and be careful. 0 -
pour boiling water on the metal, wipe as much off the wood as you can with towels, then with kerosene or diesel fuel. Dry. If you want it all out, use purple power from wal mart's automotive section but beware, it will strip wood finish.
"...hit your enemy in the belly, and kick him when he is down, and boil his prisoners in oil- if you take any- and torture his women and children. Then people will keep clear of you..." -Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fisher, speaking at the Hague Peace Conf0 -
The absolute best to use is MEK (methylethelkeytone). It totally strips off the cosmoline and gives you a good chance at getting cancer too.[:o)]Just kidding but it will work great.
Seriously, I have been using gasoline and brake cleaner and have gotten good results. Wear rubber gloves, clean outside or well ventillated area and keep away from smokers and areas that may conduct a spark.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.0 -
"Preheat oven to 350 put stock in as far as it will go for 10 minute increments turning stock around every time......."
And when your wife gets home and catches you doing this........run like hell! [:D]0 -
Fast, Easy, and messy solution, Use your kitchen sink and HOT water, don't forget Dawn dish soap and an old teaspoon. Heat the cosmoline with the water and scoop as much excess as possible with the spoon. Use a mild dish scrubber and wash it off as you would a greasy pan. Dry with a towel or shoprag. 0 -
thank you, the kerosene worked the best 0
