Colt 1883 Shotguns
Does anyone know where I can obtain an original or Reproduction Colt 1883 Hammerless Shotgun Stock and fore end? I prefer original wood, but will settle for reproduction. Thanks in advance! I can be reached directly at p51av8tor@aol.com.
Is this weapon safe to fire using blackpowder loads? Half of the "experts" I speak with say no, not with anything. The other half say shoot away but with black powder loads only. Who is really correct?

Hello Eric...
The Model 1883 Colt is a very C[8D][8D]L shotgun[^]. It was made for black powder shells, and if it is in good mechanical condition (bores not pitted), it is perfectly safe to shoot with PROPER length black powder shells (or one of the modern black powder substitutes). I would highly recommend having the gun thoroughly checked by a competent 'smith first.
As for finding an original stock set... don't hold your breath. If it were me, I would have a repro set made and expertly fitted.

The '83 will have damascus tubes made in Belgium. Unlike clunker quality, these are among the finest tubes ever built.
Still damascus and still only designed for black powder, but I think we'd both be surprised at what they'd tolerate even today.
