The 45/70 is great for bear, you just have to buy the premium ammo that says "not for use in Springfield rifles". The Marlin can safely handle the hotter loads from CorBon, Buffal Bullets and Hornady.

A 12 guage slug works well, large hole, no hair matting, lots of blood. Just have to get real close.

30-06 with a good 180 grain nostler partition is all you need
for the largest New York bears. A lever gun caliber is a Great idea
for Bear at close range but Hunting these Big Critters in New York
you never know what kind of a shot you will get at them, I would choose a medium to long range shooting rifle and use a premiun heavy bullet Like a 180 in 30 calibers. Just my opinion[;)]

Skip the Turkish guns. They look good but don't hold up.

Thank you all for your advice On my Bear gun topic. Slowpitch

There was a comment made about My choice of lever action .444 marlin about being short range gun ok, does marlin make a longer rifle in .444 ? that i could possibly use, say around 100 to 200 yd shooting ?

& as for topic On using a 12 gauge slug gun, Had a friend that tried that using his 12 gauge..... lol He made a great lung shot but Dang bear treed him for over an hour, believe it or not, so lol I think i want something much larger & killing power.

if you want better performance in 45-70 with factory ammo use buffalo bore or garret ammo. both of these companies have ammo that equals or surpasses the performance of most .444 ammo.

If your looking for a lever gun then go with the 1895G Marlin. The bullet that I would go with is the cor-bon. I read where this combo went through 2 car doors and 2 jell cells. It was a while back but this looks like a potent combo. My 2 cents worth.

Not many Black Bears are going to live long enough to complain after being slapped with a 405 grain bullet at 1200 FPS if the bullet is put in the right place.

I don't know how much better you can do than the Marlin 1895G. I use a Williams reciever sight which gives good acquisition and has less of a tendency to get hung in the brush. Do you really think you'll have a 100 to 200 yd. shot at bear in upstate N.Y.? My 1895G will shoot about 2 1/2 inches offhand at 100 if I take a little time and I figure thats good enough. I used a handloaded 455 gr. gas check lead(Bonus Bullet) last fall in the U.P. and dropped a nice boar after he took 2 steps; pretty well anchored him! Load is 37 gr. of IMR 4198 and Mag. primer...this also nearly penetrates a 1/4 inch steel boiler plate at 50 yds. and turns it into a potato chip! You might want to stick to a jacketed round, but it works for me! Shot placement is paramount as is being ethical in your kill but I doubt any black bear in N.Y. has a rib cage tougher than that boiler plate! This round also kicks like a proverbial mule so take that into consideration; I weigh 200 lbs. Have also put about 300 of these round through the gun with no apparant ill effects to gun.

Listen to aglore. Any .45-70 will drop a NY black bear like a ton of bricks. Factory loads are loaded mostly for Trapdoor Springfields. That's not a big deal. A 405 grain bullet, placed correctly, will do what you want to do. The Marlins are nice rifles. If you don't own it now, buy it and practice off hand at 100 yards, shooting at a 9" pie plate until you can hit it every time. Shot placement will always be more important than what you shoot.
