    Hello sharpshooter039...

In answer to your first question... I don't know, and I have not yet run across any written material that covers this question.

Second question... No, I don't believe that 1949 is the correct DOM, and yes, I do believe that the DOM is completely separate from the Model 70.

Last question... see my answer to your first question. However, you might try contacting Winchester directly with your question(s).

I would agree with Bert that the serial numbers are a separate run from the Win 70 series. These rifles built for Sear were in some way lower cost, and usually that means plainer wood, but sometimes other features are lacking. I have never seen a listing of serial numbers for Sears model firearms.

Sears model 53's are all post '64 built rifles. Sears sold these rifles from the late 60's through about 1973 or so.

Just a follow up ,I did contact Winchester, they had me contact the Cody museum.According to Warren Newman at cody they are all run from the same block of serial #'s the only difference being the addition of the letter prefix. He also included that the museum does not have the production records for the model 70.The blue book and the Madis reference on all model 70's or sears model 53's are an estimate of three to four years,a serial number of 142010 could have been made from 1948-1952.he also stated the model 53 sears and the model 70 winchester are the exact same firearm except in some runs they were produced with different wood and extractors and in some runs they are identical, the only problem being there are no records to show which runs are the same and which are different. He also stated about 75% of these rifles were post 64 but there were limited runs of these made for sears starting from the early 50's. Either way in my humble opinion which added with a dollar might get you a cup of coffee,if you are wanting a good shooter or hunting rifle not a collector a sears 53 in like new condition can be bought for under $250,thats hard to beat

Interesting information Sharpshooter, it is bound to come up again, and you will be the expert on this one. Absolutely nothing wrong with the storebrand rifles, unless someone is trying to get a collector price for them. I have a couple myself.

Generally the uncertainty about the year of manufacture comes from the fact that a lot of rifles and hand guns were not actually manufactured serially. That is no. 304 was not built after 303 and before 305, but what evercame out of the bin was built first and the next one grabed next, and the serials may have been 1000 different. good question, I am glad you followed it up and shared it here!

I just bought a Sears Model 53A yesterday at a gun show in Concord, NH
The rifle was supposedly a savage, but when I got it home where I could cut the ties off of it and disassembled it, I found that it is IDENTICAL to my brand new Winchester model 70! This gun is immaculate!! I really would like to know when it was made as well, but for 170.00 I could not pass it up. I'm not sure if it's ever been shot! Not a scratch on the wood and the blueing is ALL THERE. I don't feel that it is very old, but how long ago did Sears stop selling firearms??
