I've tried them in my S&W pistol, and they are accurate. On Jack Rabbits they do a fine job of putting them down with 1 shot.

They shoot pretty good in a 597 REmington. Velocity was 2222fps and accuracy was as good as anything tried. HOWEVER!!!! The 17HMR will make the 22Mag obsolete!!!!!!! C'mon all you 22Mag fans, jump in my doodoo!!! [:D][:D][:D]GHD

GHD,..how many pumps did it take to get her that fast?[}:)][;)][:D]

Given a choice,...I would take the 17HMR,..but for the original inquiry,.those pills are super explosive.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

JustC, I was a little bit surprised at the speeds also!!! But when you do 15 over the screen and you do numerous other chamberings during the same test session......must have been right! I'll bet they will do a number on a varmint! HOWEVER!!!! The 17HMR will do it faster, and longer with more accuracy!!!! GHD

I dont think the 17 will take over even with its speed there are alot of 22mag's out there and the ammo is alot cheaper I got a few different types of ammo all under $7 a box, also some of the new 22 mag ammo hits very hard...you van get weights from 30grn to 50grn which makes the 22 mag a flexable round.... I have seen used 22mag rifles sell for some pretty cheap prices and they made plenty....so take the 22mag out of the picture....I dont think so...plenty of rounds which guys thought were going to change the shooting world...went the way of cars with "fins"....and they were all great rounds...10MM 32mag 38super and scores of rifle rounds are long gone...and expensive if you can even find them.....the 17 we will see!!!!

i agree with mr. billybass. the 17 is a fad right now. like the wsm's . everyone thinks they have something special but in reality, its a round thats already here just in a different package. just compare a .177 pellet to a 22 short. the short has more butt on the receiving end.

I too considered the .17 hmr and decided on the .22 wmr for the exact reason Mr. bass brings to the discussion, versatility. There are jhp rounds available from 33 to 45 grains, assuming you count the ballistic tip as a hollow point, which I do. The only advantage I saw with the .17 was the potential for longer range accuracy. Since most all of my shooting is at 100 yards or less, I went with the .22 mag.

So far I've only tried Win, Super-X 40 gr fmj and Win, Dyna Point 45 gr jhp in my Marlin. Off a sandbag, I got groups under 1/2" at 50 yards with the low cost dyna points and 1 1/2" at 100 yards with the 40 grain jhp. I just picked up three more cartridges to try in the rifle, Super-X 40 gr jhp, Federal 40 gr fmj and the V-Max 33 gr. If anyone is interested, I'll post my results from the range on the general discussion board.

thanks boys I have been a big fan of the 22mag for a long time and always thought it should get more respect, my own tests on full water jugs, wet phone books have showed me the power of the 22mag , even in my revolvers the 22mag can punch some wicked holes, even a cheap brand I once bought for $5 a box "amsco" made in the Philipines was good stuff it was soft lead point half jacketed round that hit hard..the newer stuff with Hornady hollow point could drop alot of game up to 100 yds..... any of the better ammo could defend you with ease,I have a Taurus 8shot ultra lite that I carry and feel quite safe with
