I believe that .223 & 5.56x45 is the same. Here's a couple places I've had good luck with:

    http://www.cheaperthandirt.com
    http://www.ammoman.com
    http://www.aimsurplus.com

I have found the Sellor & Bellot ammo to be best for my AR. The round is very accurate and has next to no muzzle flash.

What do you mean by "the more powerful 5.56"? There are some slight differences but basically the same round. Civilians call it .223 and military calls it 5.56. Go to www.ammoman.com, click the .223 link and read the different listings. Some are commercial .223 and some are surplus 5.56. They all work though.

They are not the same. I beleive your manual for a rifle chambered in 223 will tell you to shoot 223 only. The 5.56 has higher pressures. My manual for my mini 14 says it will shoot 223 or 5.56.

The manual say you can use .223 or 5.56 because they are the same round.

.223 is the english system of measurement .223 inches. Civilian designation.
5.56 is metric. 5.56 mm The military designation.

but they are in fact the same round.

drobs, that is 223 ammo, S&B's website does not list a metric 5.56 round for sell in the US.

    check it out, http://www.sb-usa.com/rifle_ammo_main_page_new.htm

However the aimsurplus.com stuff seems to be the real thing. Thanks.

Bottom line: 5.56 is not "more powerful" to any degree noticable by 99.999999% of the shooters that exist on earth. In fact, it is likely to be less powerful if your buying 30 year old surplus. Even if you convinced yourself that it was "more powerful", it would also be "less accurate". Try any 5.56 and compare it to remanufactured Black Hills (or if you wish to spend more, new Black Hills).

Where did you hear that the 5.56 is "more powerful" ? While you can find some adequate 5.56 for plinking, it will not be particularly accurate. Since I don't know what you would be using it for I can only suggest you try several commercial brands as well as 5.56. Or reload (which it better than military or commercial), allowing you to set OAL and load parameters.

It sounds like someone told you that military/5.56 is "better" because it is "more powerful". I will bet the person is 15-17 years old.

Enjoy... and try the Black Hills blue box.

There is a variety of Chambers for the 223. You have the Wylde, the 5.56, the match 223...etc.

    Difference?

The throat that is cut into the rifling just beyond the case for the bullet to sit in. If you get a match .223 chambered barrel and try to fire 5.56 it could explode as the throat is not cut as deep, and the 5.56 bullet protrudes into the rifling. Thus higher pressures can be created....That's what I've been told. Whereas a 5.56 chamber has the throat cut deep and you can shoot any .223 round in it, that's why the mini-14 will eat all ammo..she has a 5.56 chamber.

Go to www.model1sales.com and when you click on their AR15 kits, they offer you the choice of 5.56 or .223 chambers...Email them for an explanation.

The 5.56 is usually loaded to produce slightly higher velocity and chamber pressures. Thus it has slightly thicker case walls for the extra strength needed to handle higher pressures. The difference comes in the chambering of the rifle, and that difference in the throat where the rifling has been removed to allow room for the seated bullet. In a 5.56mm chamber the throat is usually .162"; in a .223 chamber its usually .085". The result of firing a .223 cartridge in a 5.56 chamber is a slight loss of velocity when measured against the 5.56mm. If you own rifles specifically chambered only for .223 Rem., it is considered unsafe by SAAMI to shoot 5.56mm. THE END

Jake, Sounds like you read the Bushmaster homepage. That is exactly what they say about the two diffrent cartridges. I just have never shot the 5.56, and wanted to try it. You are probable right in that the "more powerful" which is not from a 17 year old, but from bushmaster, will be of little diffrence. Thanks for the responses.
