I shot an American Derringer in 30/30 Winchester one time and I would never do it again. The recoil is hard to describe just how harsh it was.It kind of felt like somebody hit me in the palm with a Ball Peen Hammer.

Just what do You have in mind?...If I/We knew what you were planning or wanting to do...then it would be easier to formulate a Plan of attack..

Some of these Derringers shooting long cartridges are all chamber and no barrel. Rifle cartridges use slow burning powder and need sufficient barrel length to consume it and accelerate the bullet.
No barrel, no velocity.
You will get lots of flash and noise though.
Very short barrels need very fast powder but if you fill a big rifle case with fast powder, it will blow up the little gun into smaller pieces.
Short barrels need short cartridges and fast powder for any performance. Unfortunately, there are no short rifle cartridges.
Good Derringer cartridges would be 40S&W or 45ACP which could have enough barrel length to get somewhere near their intended ballistics.0 -
Never fired one but, they were made in 45/70 cal.

With the way that 30/30 felt,if you fired that 45/70 you are begging for a triple fractured arm.Never me.

Why? Rifle calibers are meant to be fired in a rifle. Cannot see why anone would want to do that except no one else would do it...... 0
