What is .227 bullet diameter for?
I reload for 22 centerfires, like 22-250 and diam. is .224".
Saw this box of .227, can't figure what for.

tex, the .227 bullets are intended for the old .22 Savage Hi-Power which as a groove diameter of .228. Case was very similiar to the 30/30 winchester case, except necked down. 0 -
The .227 bullets were also used in some first generation wildcats or "proprietary" cartridges that had to be handloaded. The only one I can remember is the .228 Ackley Magnum, although I know there were others.
The .228 was a species of .22-06, if I recall. P.O. Ackley would sell you a custom rifle plus the custom reloading dies and tools for it all as one (pretty reasonable) package or he'd build the rifle on your action and stock. He liked to build them on Winchester or Reminton-manufactured U.S. P17 "Enfields."
The .228 was meant for varmints and big game (as was the .22 Savage H.P.) but was really dependent on bullet quality, which was pretty erratic in those days in these small calibers. Ackley also made custom bullets in this diameter for his customers.0 -
One point, in Ackley's day, many states banned deer hunting with bullets .224 and smaller. Switching to a .227 (for Ackley) was a rule beating move.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
The Winchester 22 W.C.F. also was a .228 diameter.
