S&W 629 Light Hunter Opinions?
Hello: OK I'm infatuated with S&W's 629 Light Hunter. Several for sale on GunBroker. Tired of deer hunting in Iowa with a shotgun, and want to take a crack at pistol hunting. At @$900.00 unscoped this is a chunk of change, but it is from the performance center, and with the tuning, porting, and other modifications, I'd probably spend more on a plain gun before I was done. I know there are other 44's out there, but has anyone shot this pistol? What do you think? Is yours scoped? What scope would you recommend if any? Thanks for your input in advance.

My brothers got one. Good gun, but IMHO is badly overpriced if you look at performance gains. Not any better the the regular 629 for hunting purposes. Not any better than a good Ruger(Super Blackhawk or Redhawk) for hunting either, and you can handload those up very hot. Not pretty but stout and just as accurate.-- He has a Burris pistol scope on his. Excellent scope, but I don't remember the power range right now.Very clear and he says it has held zero well and adjustments are dependable...............[8D] 0 -
I too think the PC Lt. Hunter is overpriced.
There are 629 Power Ports available for $500 or less, add to that a scope that is variable up to 4x and you've got around $700 tied up so you save a couple hundred to spend on practicing. And if you add the scope cost to the PC Lt. Hunter to make apples to apples you have an even large savings.
Don't get me wrong ... the "Hunter" is a good revolver. I have 2 friends that have them and have shot both, but find neither significantly better than my 629 PP.
And as already mentioned there are other good 44mag revolvers to be had from Ruger and Taurus to mention a couple. Or you can "up the stakes" and try you hand at hunting w/ a Thompson Center Encore or Contender single shot ...
However at the end of the day it's your money so go with what you like the best, even if that means paying a couple hundred more, because if you don't you'll keep thinking "what if I'd spent the extra money...".
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I bought a S/W 629 Classic (6 1/2", full lug, stainless) a few years ago for about $450. Unlike the Colt .44 mags (Anaconda), S/W has kept the price fairly consistent and you can still get a new one for about $500-$550. That's a far cry from the $1000 you're looking at.
I also wanted to try something different for deer hunting during shotgun season. Took an 8 pt. a couple of years ago with the S/W, using the factory iron sights. And the shot was about 30-35 yards.
The only thing I'd change on my Smith would be to have it 'magnaported' to reduce the muzzle jump. And I believe you can buy them factory ported now.
Good hunting!0
