Packaging Collectible Ammo
How do the box collectors shrink rap the collectible boxes so that they don't get damaged.

The fancy guys use the plastic freezer wrap with the heat bar. Others will wrap it in some form of plastic or cellophane product as they would a Christmas present.

Thanks Teak, Any idea where to get a small heat bar. 0 -
I've used Saran wrap and it works well and is a little thicker then the other cling wraps and just wrap like a present and pull tight Lee 0 -
There are literally dozens of different types of "plastic" wrap. Even the same manufacturers change formulas. No one has tested the long term effect of any of these used for "archival" purposes. Even the leeching of the plasticizers into food has been questioned. You will be taking a chance no matter what kind of plastic wrap you use.

Tom,
Neal makes an excellent point - many plastic products can do a serious number on cartridges. Also the rounds themselves will produce some gases as they age. I do know that the considered opinion of the IAA is that there should be good air circulation around the specimens. Now how either affects labels and the like I don't know. I think it is appropriate to wrap boxes when taking them to a show to sell, because many shoppers can harm the box simply from repeated handling before a sale, but as long as they are stored in a cool, dry environment, my gut feeling is that the wrap doesn't buy anything for archival purposes and in fact may be harmful over the long term. I do know for sure that caseless ammo cannot be stored in plastic for extended periods.

I never hesitate to promote local businesses. I know these folks sell the heat seal bags in an acid free type which won't harm the paper in cartridge boxes. They also have the sealers.
