I was wondering if any one had any pics of the damage cause by the bolt in the reciever of the 742. As a reference of what to look for.
Thanks

I need to buy a bolt assembly for a Remington 742 243 rifle Does anyone know of a source Thanks L.D. 0 -
Call brownelles and get the correct wrench made by MENCK,The nut is VERY tight if it was never removed and patience is required here!
Remove the forarm and clamp the barrel Upside down in barrel vice jaw bolcks then put on your wrench on the nut holding it firmly in place
and give it a Good wrap with a mallet to get it started,This will do the trick. If you dont have the proper tools you could damage the rifle
or get so frustrated you will fling it across the room[:0] Good luck.

the Rem. 742 was not intended as a "take down" but that does not mean the truly determined cannot prevail providing enough brute force & ignorance are applyed. go to "www.brownells.com" and look for their #590-012-742 Menck 742 Wrench. it should help but don't expect the job to be easy.

Thanks for the help. I will look into that wrench.
The nut size must be a little odd-ball, perhaps close to 20mm.
As for the 742 not meant to be a take down rifle, well to correct you on this matter. I received literature and manual from Remington just a week ago, And that's exactly what they called it. Also included in the manual are the instructions on how to take the rifle apart. With common tools. Except the Barrel nut)[:(!]
Except for the ignorance part, I suggest you read up on the subject.
Thanks

I have used a Crescent wrench, either a 10 or 12 inch, to remove a 742 barrel. Worked, without damage for me.

UNFORTUNETLY REM. USED 3 OR 4 DIFFERENT NUT SIZES ON THE 742, THE WRENCH MENTIONED MAY WORK. I'VE GOT AN OLDER WRENCH THAT IS DOUBLE SIDED AND THAT COVERS 80% OF THE RIFLES I GET IN (THE 12" CRESENT DOES THE REST) 0 -
Hello, yeah, they're fun aren't they? I always wondered "WHY?" when there are so many easier ways to do it.

We got it!
I modified an old open end wrench, a little tap and off she goes.[:D]
Thanks for the help, I won't ask for the torque when tightening it.
Looks as though I made a right decision. The chamber is in need of cleaning. Which isn't easily visible when the rifle is assembled.
Also ordered some Blue Wonder, I'll give that stuff a shot.
A shot of oil and the old 742 will be ready for next November.[:)]
I have read about the 742 receiver has rail problems, Now that I have a good visual internally, What problems should I look for, For damage and wear on the whole rifle?
Thanks again
