Big 5 sporting goods here in Phx is having a sale on Savage rifles with a 3x9 scope and syn. stock in 30.06 for $399. Might also check Wallyworld, they usually have similar sales around hunting season.

Thanks Kingjoey. I forgot to ask as well, I am left handed and left eye dominate. I have always shot handgun left hand but always shot rifle, shotgun, and bow right handed because that is the way my dad taught me growing up. Now that I will be purchasing what I hope to be my last deer rifle, should I be looking at a left handed model, or will it not matter since one eye will be closed while sighting through a scope?

I have the same south paw problem and I would buy a Savage or Ruger 77 left hand model. I have the Ruger in a 270 and have been happy with it. I do shoot left handed though.

I would recommend something made by Savage, Howa or CZ.

    Take a look at Tikka.
You will be amazed at the difference in quality over the other mainstream brands.
    I was.
And it shoots exactly where it's pointed.
You can get Stainless/Synthetic for well under $500 and in left hand versions.
Look for Burris Fullfield II on Ebay and you're set.
Tikka comes with rings and sling mounts included.

I would get me a Thompson Encore in 30/06, in stainless or blue. But if you feel you can't kill a deer with one shot then I would get a winchester 70 or a ruger 77. Both a mauser based actions and both can be had for reasonable price.

I don't know about you, but my weakest link in deer kills is NOT my rifle. Most of my shots are less than 100 yards, I can easily stay under $ 500.

Tika was mentioned. One of my buds got one and I was also impressed. Fit & finish was good, operation was very smooth and it shot very well. I don't know what he paid, but I don't hunt with my best rifle.

I bought the Remington 710 30-06 for $399 and I am very pleased. Bore sighted right out of the box and it wasn't any trouble to fine tune the scope. It's not a gun you'd want to leave to your children like a keep sake or anything but I love mine!

I've got a Remington 700 ADL in 30-06, 99% blue, two dings on the wood, with a Simmons Mod. 44 Mag scope (3x10). Will take $375 for it.
