    Hello wayneo...

It simply indicates an updated version (mechanical changes) of the original Model. Winchester began the practice of using the letters "A", "B", and all the way up to "E" (on the Model 1897/87) on the Model 1873. I don't know what the red "W" on the stock of a Model 88 or 100 signifies.

    THE "W" MEANS WINCHESTER

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

Wayneo: If you are refering to the "Red W" on the pistol grip cap, yes it does stand for Winchester, but what is unique about it , Is Winchester only used this style of pistol grip cap for a couple of years, primarily in 1962/63, they used them all up by early 64.
