It sounds like a pen flare gun. We used to be able to use them in my field (wildland fire) to start backfires, etc., but they are now illegal. I think it has to do with the fact that a certain caliber cartridge (~ 30 cal. ???) can fit into them and be fired. We have a few of these guns in our cache with hundreds of rounds, but can't do anything with them anymore. Dont know the brand off hand. We use 30 mm flare guns now.

I think that most pen guns that fire in that fashion are considered NFA weapons. That's the same class of weapons the also include machine guns, supressors ect. If it is a NFA type and not properly registered it could cause you alot of trouble.

I'm no expert on pen guns, so you'd be well advised to research the subject for yourself.

Had one years ago. They were actually sold in a university book store for protection. ATF eventually declared them to be "registerable" since they were smoothbores (short bbl shotgun) and capable of firing a .22 cartridge. Lost it someplace. Be aware of the legalities.

Pengun is one of many makers of such devises. I use the word devise as that is how the ATF class them. If memory serves, Pengun built them during them 60's and very early 70's. It was, most likely chambered for .22 cal tear gas blanks and or .22 shorts. These were developed by U.S. and British intellegence services as last ditch or close quarters weapons, in the 50's. As previously stated research yours quietly, The ATF tends to regard these rather gravely, if they fire live ammo of any kind and are unregistered.

Kill all the lawyers and the world will be much better for it.

penguns were and still are standard issue for military aircrew in survival vests. they are registered as NSN: MK79 KITS, MK-80 FLARE & MK31 GUN. they changed brand names over the years from vietnam era to present, but still are made in hoards. they are class 1.4 pyro's. you will see varieties of these in marine survival kits too. all are very collectible and command premiums. in the pack is the most desired. colored flare kits from vietnam go for over 100.00 ea. green day red day? any of you vets remember the game in case you got shot down?

Used to see USN Signal Hand Fired Mk80, out of date flares for these at gun shows. Navy flares used a small pistol/rifle primer but the tear gas cartridges used shotgun primers. All were centerfire. I've seen two types of tear gas cartridges for this gun. One was about two inches long and 1/2" dia. and had a thin wall about 1/32", the second
was only about 1 1/4" long and 7/16 dia with a thick wall giving about a 1/4" bore.
To make any of these shoot a 22 would take a lot of work.
