choke tube stuck
Any suggestions on how to get a "stuck" extra full turkey choke out of a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag? It's in there and hasn't been changed for 2 years.(didn't help turkey hunting in the rain with it) I tried penetrating oilbetween the choke and the barrel but all I have to work with is this thin piece of metal made to fit between the 2 notches on the end of the choke tube. I put that much pressure on the tool it actually started to bend. Does Mossberg make a different type of tool that I can get some pressure on to turn it out or does anyone have any suggestions? I know I should have "known better" and removed it when I put it away last spring.
Any advice appreciated.

Scott,
Provided that the choke extends out of the barrel, something that works for me is penetrating oil, slight amount of applied heat, and a big old wood clamp. The kind actually made of wood with the two tightening rods. I don't know what wood workers call it, but you don't have any metal touching your barrel or choke tube.
Tighten by hand and turn. Usually breaks free quickly if worked a little clockwise (tightening) too.
Good luck!!0 -
Sounds like something worth taking your time over.
Get yourself some Kroil oil - that's a brand name; Midway - among others - sell it. It's got to be the MOST effective penetrating oil out there. Moly-coated bullet shooters use it to clean their bores as it gets under fouling to loosen it up for removal with no abrasive ever needed.
If you have the metal key - that thin piece of metal - & it's still in good shape, you can stiffen it up a lot by taking a wooden dowel rod that's a snug fit inside the choke, then cut a deep slot in it to take the key. The idea is to make a tool-holder for your key that adds support & keeps the key from jumping out should something slip at a bad moment.
Warm the muzzle a bit with a hair dryer, heat gun or - carefully - a propane torch set very low, then apply the Kroil to the exposed joint. Continue with the heat for awhile, add more Kroil, then let everything cool down & soak for 24 to 48 hours.
Now take your beefed-up key & slip the dowel into your bore, seat the exposed tabs of the metal key into the slots in the choke, get that hair dryer out again & heat the muzzle end & turn the dowel while pushing it into the muzzle to keep the key seated.
That clamp p3skyking mentioned is callled a "Jorgensen" or hand-screw clamp. They're not cheap to buy if you don't need one, but can be handy when nothing else will get a grip on something.
If you have a friend help hold the gun while you operate the tool, having your hands focused on the touchy part while your friend concentrates on just holding the big piece steady can make the clamp unnecessary.0 -
What spclark and skyking said. I also had this happen with my browning GTI. Helps if you have one of those bench gun cleaning
vises and a buddy to hold everything down, but the gun shop used a remington wrench (the metal one) if it fits your notches. Along with the slight heating, the rem wrench held in place with one hand and give the tool a sharp wrap with a wooden or plastic hammer. Once you get it moving more Kroil or other and work it back and forth til it comes free easy. Then brass brush the threads and some copper never seize on the threads. My Browning wrench was plastic and wouldn't budge it(broke the wrench).0 -
The choke tube does not extend out of the barrel but rather seats fluch with the end of the barrel so I may have to give the "low heat and penetrating oil" thing a try. Just can't seem to get a good grip on the thin metal of the choke installation tool and only having two grooves to work with. Where would I find Kroil? Is Midway a chain store or mail order company?
Thanks for the suggestions.0 -
You can order direct from www.kanolaboratories.com or
www.midwayusa.com
www.precisionreloading.com
kano is the manufacturer, midwayusa is a large reloading and shooters supply, and precision reloading is also a high quality source of shooting supplies.0 -
I HAD TO USE A QUARTER ON MY 835 AND A PAIR OF VISEGRIPS. GOOD LUCK

I know the choke wrench you have and it's not going to work. You need the T handle wrench made out of metal. It has a pilot shaft that goes into the barrel and gets a solid grip on the choke without burring the notches. Got mine at Sportmart and it's one of the best investments I've made! 0 -
If you were to order Kroil from Midway by itself the shipping will probably run you as much as the oil. Go to the Kano site and try to locate a stocking retailer near you. Also there is a product that I believe most of the Wall-Mart stores carry, it is called Marvel oil or perhaps Marvel Mystery oil, not sure as I've not bought any in quite a while, but it is another super penetrating oil, that to me is similar to Kroil ... maybe not quite as good, but close.
Another suggestion is to check Brownells at: www.brownells.com and see if they have a shop grade choke tool that will work for you.
Lastly, something I used 40+ years back on a stuck vari-choke. I filled a clean 1lb coffee can with kerosene and place the barrel in the can muzzle down. Gave it a few days, tried it, still froze, left it for another week and with a little back and forth movement finally got it to start to move. Worked it a little more and back in the can it went for another couple days and that finished it. All I did was try and check on the kero level every day and top it off when needed. Obviously the modern oils are better, but ... if you can't get 'em then go with the kerosene.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
go to your local G. M. dealer's parts department. they have G. M. brand "heat riser lube". if anything can beat kroil as a penetrating oil, it is G. M. Heat Riser Lube (mr. Goodwrench"s own)
