Have not bought a rifle yet, but the first will be a Savage .243 w/ iron sites.

No single shot there; a bolt. And very hard to come by, used.
I might spring the $400 for a new one eventually.

For a .223 look at the CZ rifles. The .243 is nice as mentioned jsergovic but if .223 is what you are loking for look at the CZ line. For semi auto it is a different question. [8D]

Look at the Rossi single shot. Academy has them. And they also have the combo with interchangeable barrels, 223 and 20 gauge. Not a well finished gun, but they shoot good.

New England Firearms (owned by Marlin, I believe) seems to have a pretty nice single shot for about $200. Most are no iron sights,, but I looked here on the auctions and at least the youth model in .223 and some of the rimmed calibers have open sights, so it might be available if one asks.

All the Rossi rifles I have seen are drilled and tapped for the Weaver 92A base; same base fits T/C Contender.

you really should consider the NEF as mentioned. you can have a new barrel( cal) fitted for less than 200.00. i have fired the rossi also and i opt for the NEF. i can sell you one for 10% over dealer cost which comes too 201.24 + shipping

Have Ruger #3, in the .223. Don't know anything about the above recomendations, but the #3 is one sweet piece. With care, would last long, long time. Very good condition. Metal Ruger sites, with two piece bases for scope mounting, attached. It would sell for more than your budget, but would be a fine and servicable piece for many years. Might also, be veiwed as a semi-collector. If interested: gwvr@cowboystate.net

They are good guns, and the price is right.

Yes they are both drilled and tapped. As a matter of fact, some of the NEF come with a scope base that accepts Weaver rings.
