STEYR 1900
I have a steyr 1900 there is a ser .#9724B stamped on the barell and receiver and # 24 stamped on the top of bolt at the front Iknow they were made in Austria. Are they of any value for the actions like the Mauser's ? I don't know much about the old military rifles. Thanks JIM

Hi, Jim--My guess would be that you have an 1895 Model Mannlicher made by Steyr for Holland, and that 1900 is the date your particular rife was produced. Could be, though, that it is the very similar 1893 Model made for Romania, and yet another variation was made for the Greeks. If you describe the proof marks, caliber (6.5mm?), etc., we should be able to pin it down. The answer to your question is: no, sorry, not really. Some nice sporters were produced on these actions in years gone by, but the Mauser edged them out because the Mannlicher's magazine protrudes below the bottom of the stock at the balance point where most folks like to carry a rifle, and the magazine requires a special charger clip to function as a repeater. But, the good news is that if your's is in nice condition it has value to a collector of military firearms. You can research the various auctions to find out what they are selling for. 0 -
the only proof marks on it are what looks like a crown with an"E" under it . has a 17" barell left side of reciever is stamped SYEYR 1900 the rear sight is missing but there is an 1/8 inch groove for it. the front sight is a 1/4 inch tall blade on a square block (dovetail style) It appears to be 6 or 6.5because .223 is to small and .270 is to big. the stock im sure is not original because it is checkered; has a schnabel forend;and has been relief cut behind the trigger guard Iwould assume for a person with small hands. does this help with ID? THANKS JIM

Believe previous poster is correct. From your description of the front sight, it appears that you have a sporterized Model 1895 Dutch carbine. My WAG is when it was sporterized, most of the military markings were removed?
This link from Dr. Kerrigan's excellent web-site www.oldrifles.com shows a later version that he identifies as a Model 1895/08/15.
