J. C. Higgins Model 50 30-06 NEW IN CASE
I have a J.C.Higgins Model 50 30-06 in original wooden suitcase with J.C.Higgins 4X scope (scope in original box), original model 50 owners manual. It has a Belgium action. The gun is in brand new condition and possibly never been fired. I was wanting some info and a value of this collectors item. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!

I can find no J.C. Higgins/Sears model 50 in the crossover lists I checked. Unfortunately however this is not a collectors item. Value is derived from demand on used firearms and the Sears/Higgins models find scant interest from collectors. It may be a fine rifle, but will always have less interest and value than the underlying model built with the original manufacturers name. My estimate of the retail for this rifle is $150-$200 tops.

The main value on these guns has typically been the FN actions used in them. Only the barrels were marked JC Higgins. I used to by them to use the action to build another custom gun with. I still see them at gun shows, etc. People usually ask around $300.00 for them and work their way down from there in my area. They usually don't have any collector value unless you find the perfect buyer. They are just shooters to most people....................[8D] 0 -
This gun was one of the finest available in the 50's. Unfortunately, they were made for Sears by Firearms International, Inc., which was later on exposed as an "agency of our own Federal Government" that imported all the guns during the 50's and 60's. These "contracts" such as the Sears gun was also one made for Montgomery Wards, and also such firms as Western Auto Stores among many others. Manufactured on the latest and greatest, (for their time), FN Belgium actions, these were great "Hunting Rifles" but were never manufactured with the "Collector" in mind. There are a few collectors that specialize in some of the old Sears guns, but the value has never been anything noteworthy for these guns.
To me, I believe many of these Models made in those times were some "Real Great Guns" the like of which we will never see again. But, not from a "Dollar" standpoint. However, if you are a person that likes to hunt, you can rest assured that gun your have would NOT take a back seat to any of the NEW guns out there in the same caliber. Most likely, the Higgins might be even more accurate and the finish and fit might even be better! The Real Value in the nice set your describe is that you have something not everyone has and, ..... something that is equal to almost anything out there, with maybe the exception of some very expensive "custom" built guns. Shoot it.... Enjoy It!

I have one of these, also in '06, and when I got it, the old Weaver K- whatever was cooked, so I planned to do the same thing:keep the action and build a REAL gun out of it!! Our gunsmith at the time said "Why not see how it shoots first.?" Good advice. Put a Leupold 3x9 on it and it shoots hunting and target loads great. Have not hunted with it yet, but I would be interested in the rifle ' if you want to sell.
My thinking was these were made by High-Standard for Sears. Any references for that?0 -
I have one in .270 it's a shooter!! Wouldn't trade it for the world! I

several of these old store brand firearms are the best shooters to be found and can be bought at a good price, great for guys like us who just love to shoot, bad for someone who found granddad's old rifle in the closet,I own a couple of sears model 53's in 30-06, these are the old model winchester model 70's and you can buy them for less than half the price of a model 70,both of mine are in 98% or better with great wood and I gave less than $250.00 each for them, you would never find a pre-64 model 70 for that 0 -
Not made by High Standard, see Ranchero Paul above. FN Mauser action.
