Win, Rem mag vrs Weatherby mag
I had this question asked so I came here for the answer. I have never been too ashamed to ask about something even though some might wonder as to why with all my years afield I don't already know the answer. Here goes.
What is the difference between Weatherby mag and Winchester mag.
A friend asked me this and I had no answer. I thought it was the diameter of the casing but was afraid to commit until I was told otherwise. He wanted to know if he got a Weatherby 7mm ultra mag would he be able to use Remington or Winchester 77mm mag ammo in his gun. Thanks

no!! the weatherby mag has a rounded (radius) shoulder where the win and rem mags have tapered shoulders at pre-determined angles. The RUM is the longest of the magnums from case head to shoulder,..followed by the STW, then the weatherby magnum and finally the rem and winchester mags. Ammunition is NOT interchangeable and head/extremity trauma most definitely the result of any venture in that area.
The "fireforming" of an Ackley caliber from the parent caliber is different in that the chamber dimensions are so close,..that the changing of the shoulder angle and straightening of the body taper offer litte chance of danger due to the shoulder position being within a few .001's of the original,...but firing a 7mm rem mag in a 7mmRUM chamber would positively result in a case head seperation upon the first firing, as it would with a weatherby mag fired in the RUM chamber. The 404 jeffries (parent caliber of the RUM's) is larger in body diameter as well as much longer in length. there is nowhere near enough brass to stretch that distance and circumference from the wthby mag or win/rem mags to fill the chamber and still stay intact. The only interchanging that can ever be done is the firing of the parent cartridge in an Ackley chamber of the parent cartridge I.E. (280 rem ammo fired in a 280 rem Ackley Improved chamber) calibers can not be interchanged I.E. (7mm rem mag fired in a 7mmRUM chamber)

The basic difference is that the 300 win.mag(and 264 win,7mm rem.& 338 win.mags) were designed to fit in a 30.06 length action so that gunsmiths of the time could take advantage of all the Mauser & 03 Springfied actions that were plentifull and popular at the time. The case for these and the 300 Weatherby mags(and the 8mm Rem.and the 7mm STW) is designed on the old 300/375 H&H mag case. The Weatherbys have the case body taper straightened and have the shoulder and case blown out for more powder capacity. I believe the 8mm Rem is improved out even more. They have to use a very long action(like the Weatherby,etc.).That is one of the reasons the 7mm Rem., 300 win. and 338 win. have always been popular. The average working guy back in those days couldn't afford a Weatherby rifle, but could buy a win. or rem. or build one on a Mauser or Springfield action. As stated above the Rem. Ultra mags are based on the larger diameter 404 Jeffery case. -- Some of the other Weatherby Mags(257,270,etc.) are shorter and will fit in a 30.06 length action. -- PS = Weatherby does not make an "Ultra" mag. Remington makes the Ultra mags( short and long) and the Win.short mag case is slightly different in dimension. -- If he has a Weatherby rifle that has been chambered in a Remington Ultra Mag. caliber he can shoot any of the properly marked and proper caliber ammo from any of the name brands in his gun, but none of the different caliber magnums ammo will interchange. Tell your friend to only shoot the proper ammo of the exact caliber that his gun is marked for and is chambered in for safety's sake, but it does not matter what color the factory box is.-- I hope I understood your question properly....... Good luck...............[8D] 0 -
yep,..temblor has the dimensions correct. The 8mm mag and the RUM are seperated by only .005" (the RUM being the shorter) The 7mm STW is a necked down version of the 8mm rem mag. The OAL of the case is as follows
7mm rem mag 2.500"
7mm wthby mag 2.550"
7mm STW 2.850"
7mm RUM 2.845"
300 H&H 2.850"
300win mag 2.620"
300 wtbhy mag 2.825"
300 RUM 2.845"
There is no body taper measurements here,..which when accompanied by case stretch in an incompatable chamber is of paramount importance. This also does not take into account shoulder position with respect to the axis of the case,..which is of equal importance. I can post the figures but it is far easier to tell your partner to leave well enough alone and shoot ONLY the ammunition stamped on the side of the barrel.
