Help with handgun selection!
I'm looking at the ruger 22/45,ruger MII or the browning buckmark. I will be using it to take coon hunting at night. Which one might be better with open sights or scope. Are there other options that would be similiar in cost? I have a T/C contender so it is also an option if I get a 22 barrel. Would a red dot scope work better or worse at night?
Thanks for the help.

The Browning is a fine firearm. However, for hunting racoons at night, I would go with one of the new Ruger MKII pistols that are drilled and tapped from the factory for Weaver bases. Then the addition of an inexpensive laser sight should complete the bill. From past exerience, at least here in my neighborhood, this sport can be rough on a firearm and I feel the Ruger will take much more harsh treatment than most of the other 22 semi-autos. Check on the legality of the laser for hunting in you state. 0 -
Ruger MarkII. No need to say more.

When you say laser are you talking of the trigger guard type? Are they accurrate and do they stay solid cause the type of hunting at night can be let's say tangled and very bumpy. I use a marlin semi with a simmons 4x32 and never had a problem but it always gets tangled in something. what laser do you reccomend?

I have a 22/45 and it would be great for what you are wanting to do. It has a stainless bull barrel and polymer frame for all weather durability. It has a tasco pro point dot scope. The dot scope will work well at night because you can adjust the intinsity of the dot so it is visable in daylight and dim it so it is not overpowering at night. And the 22/45 is very accurate with the bull barrel. The polymer frame also makes it a little lighter than the MK-II. Contact me if interested. opec@brick.net 0 -
My customers are using the BSA laser as it is very inexpensive. Some are mounted under the barrel on the Walter P22 pistols and most are on the top rail. The unit is quite small and unobtrustive. The advantage of the laser at night is the dot on the target rather than trying to use a light to illuminate the sights and the target. 0 -
My vote is for the Ruger. It works first time every time and is very rugged. [8D]

Thanks for your help guys! What length barrel would you reccommend? Would the 10 inch be too long to pack around, or would the 5.5 be too short to be as accurate?

for what you want a 5 1/2" Ruger would be just right , I would go with the 22/45 because of the lighter weight, check your state hunting laws about use of a laser, here in WI they are illegal, even for coon hunting 0 -

My Buckmark Standard with the 5.5" bull barrel could take out a coon at 50 ~ 70 yards without a problem, as long as I could see him and the gun. The nights are pretty bright up here. Of course, that is after regular practice, about 1200 rounds...
I'm up to maybe 2000 through it now.
It's not set up for scope, to the best of my knowledge, and I know nothing of lasers (on guns).
I have heard, repeatedly, that it is easier to stril and clean. On the Buckmark, there's really only one spot that requires regular cleaning, and you can get to it with an open slide (even though you should strip and clean after every use).0
