    Yes, they did. Before WWI in fact. The standard practice was an offset scope mounted on the left side of the receiver. This type gave the appearance of sitting right upon, or just a little off, the action

    Later, the high turret and some claw mounts had enough clearance to place them directly over the axis of the bore.

    p3skyking - Thanks. Really liked the way they looked but would not want that type of mount on a rifle. Thanks for clearing that up.
