Stevens Savage 20ga Dbl Brl SBS
Attempting to find out information pertaining to a Stevens Savage 20ga Double Barrel Side-By-Side Pre-WWII Shotgun.
My greatgrandfather was the original owner and he purchased it sometime prior to WWII. My father inherited it upon my greatgrandfather's death where my father further passed it down to me.
The firearm was immaculate due to be kept in a case since it was purchased. A few years ago (when I received it) I was examining the piece of perfection and afterwards wiped it down and put it away. It stayed in it's case for about another year or so before touching it again. Upon removing it from it's case, I found small rust spots from fingerprints that I missed when wiping it down.
Currently, it is in the shop attempting to correct but chances are not good. The areas aren't bad but the weapon did go from excellent (practically new) condition to slightly less.
The question is where can I go with exact information on the weapon to gain further information i.e.: date of manufacturing, value, etc...
Thanks

sportsfan,
First let me welcome you to the wonderful world of GB.[^]
Secondly,in order to help us help you,we'll need to know more about your old SxS.Stevens/Savage wasn't known for keeping a lot of production records, but if you can give us the Model no.,Serial no.(if it has one),and any other info/markings (barrel length etc.),we'll do the best we can.Sounds like you've got a nice piece there and something to be proud of,BUT,let me warn you,if the "shop" you have it at starts talking about a re-blue job.DON'T DO IT!!Your gun is worth more in original(if not perfect)condition than it will be after being refinished.
BTW,we prefer not to call them "WEAPONS".They are not a weapon unless the user chooses to use it as such. They are "Guns" or "FIREARMS".[;)]

Thanks...I plan to pick it up today from the shop and yes, they did mention refinishing it. I knew it would decrease it's value by doing so and I told them not to do anything more than what I had asked of them.
I will post more information on it either later today or possibly tomorrow (depending on what the wife has in store for this afternoon).
I refer to them as weapons due to US Army training. In the Army, they are weapons. I suppose I need to adjust to civilian lingo and lose the military bit eh?
Thanks for the welcome again..

sportsfan,
Ah!,so that explains the "weapon" thing, and is perfectly understandable.I hope there was no offense taken 'cause there certainly wasn't any meant.[:I]
We look forward to hearing back on the SxS.

sportsfan,
Like I said, precise info on Stevens/Savage stuff is sketchy at best,
but here's what I found.
2003 Gun Traders Guide
Model 311 Springfield
Same general specifications as Stevens Model 530 except earlier
production has plain stock and forearm;checkered on current guns.
Originally produced as a "Springfield" gun, this model became a
part of the Stevens line in 1948 when the Springfield brand name
was discontinued.Made 1931-89.
Pre-WW II...................NiB $377 Ex $301 Gd $205
Post-WW II..................Nib $332 Ex $265 Gd $180
However,
The Blue Book shows that approx.145,500 311's were made
from 1926-45.
So,I guess it's anybody's guess as to exactly
when yours was made.
Maybe someone else can narrow it down a little better.

Those prices sound good for a 12ga but I would add 25%-35% for a 20ga....gunut 1
each and every day of my life forces me to add to the list of people who can kiss my xxx....0 -
The stock isn't totally plain...Tomorrow upon being at the office, I will grab my digital camera and take some pictures of it and post here...maybe that'll help...
Thanks for your effort and info thus far...

Your Stevens 311 series H is not pre war.Being an H series and haveing a serial number and 3 inch chamber date it post 1968. 0 -
Well then there's a problem...it was purchased by my greatgrandfather who died in 1965...so unless he invented a time traveling machine, something isn't right...

I don't know about a time machine.I do know the 3" 20 gauge shotshell came into existance about 1955.I also know there were no 20 gauge shotguns chambered for 3 inch shells prior to that time.I also know that model 311 shotguns were not serial numbered prior to the gun control act of 1968.If you contact Savage Arms and give them the model and serial number of your shotgun, the can tell you the date of manufacture. 0
