What Caliber? How can I tell?
Just got an Eddystone Enfield. WAS under the impression it was .303 caliber, but, now I found out the Eddy was also made in .30/06.
I've taken the stock off and there are no caliber markings I can see. Anybody know what I do next?

Someone will probably correct me but I think if it's 30/06 it will have a US Ord bomb on it.

Several things. For 303, look for British proofs, a larger bolt face for the rimmed cartridge, Checking to see if a 303 will fit in the chamber, it being fatter than a 30-06.
For 30-06, look for a US PROPERTY marking. Check to see if a 30-06 will chamber and extract.
Have a gunsmith look at it.

My reference notes that the Eddystones in .303, were marked "MK 1" and have a " 5 pointed star" stamped, on the bolt handle.

I agree with checking for marks. The British were proofmark crazy!. Look for a crown with BNP, and a little square designating pounds per sq, inch.As Rufe said, if British it should have a MK* somewhere.

the SAFEST and best way, take it to a gunsmith and ask him. it should be checked for propper head space before firing anyway!

the 303 will have a flat breech face and the 30-06 will have a coned breech face 0 -
greeker375,
The 303 is NOT fatter than the 30-06.
303
30-06
Head = 0.460
0.470
Shoulder = 0.401
0.436
case length = 2.222
2.494
Just a minor clarification.

How simple can it get?
Pull the bolt out, drop a sized -06 case in the chamber. If it goes all but a little way (within 1/16") of flush with the breach face it's a -06, if it sticks out 3/8" or so it's a 303Brit.

Best.
Put a 303 case along side a 30-06 and you will see it is indeed fatter. Your post did not mention rim diameter which is the fatter part.
Just a clarification.

You don't put the rim in the chamber............... 0
