Probably the XD-9. It is rather user-friendly like the Glock. The Witness is a nice gun, but the safety and DA/SA setup are a little confusing for newbies. The CZ100 is also pretty foolproof but it is probably a little more complicated than the XD.

Have you considered a revolver? EXTREMELY user friendly, great all around guns, and usually priced less than most autos.

If you've pretty much settled on one of the three mentioned then I agree with the suggestion of the XD.

However, as suggested by "Jake" the revolver is the most straight forward. Yes the capacity is less but in defensive situations there are typically not high round count exchanges. Those situations are generally at less than 5 yards, often times almost arms length, and average under 5 rounds fired.

Xracer's advice (as usual) if very good, but don't mistake that advice as extending to a caliber recommendation for SD or CCW piece that was part of your original question as I certainly don't think it was intended that way. Owning a 22 is a great way to learn the fundamentals that will translate directly into the larger calibers where you will have to add the element of recoil management. However, regardless of caliber, especially for SD and carry you MUST practice regularly.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

Gotta agree with Jake and Contender a revolver is far simpler/ user friendly than any auto. Revolvers can take all kinds of dirt, abuse, and generally lack of maintenance and still function putting all six shots out the end of the pipe, can't always say that for an auto. I own lot's of handguns and they all are fun to own and shoot but the ones I keep in the truck and by my bed for defense are all revolvers for the simple reason that under almost any circumstance they will function if they are needed. I know this will raise the "hackles" of the auto fans but everyone will agree that we've seen autos fail to function for a variety of reasons, not clean or maintained, anything contacting with the slide during recoil, and many other reasons why an auto won't chamber and fire the next shot. Get a revolver and shoot it a lot and become comfortable with it.
Just my opinion, everybodies got one.

Well, I guess I'll have to be the contrary one here.

I've always felt one should crawl before they walk, and walk before they run.......so I'll suggest that you start off with a .22 rimfire pistol or revolver.

Learn how to shoot, and learn how to shoot safely, and practice, practice, practice (which is much cheaper to do with .22).

When you've mastered that, then move up to something bigger.
