most common cause of misfeads??
I have a 2 Russian 9 X 18 Makarovs, an 8 rounder and a 10 rounder. I am happy with both of them but I get stovepipes and jams about every 25-30 rounds sometimes. This seems high to me. Is it? I use wolf Russian ammo. My magazines are aftermarket on the 10 rounder and original military on the 8 rounder. Would a stronger floorplate spring help? How about a stronger recoil spring (19 pounds instead of the standard 17 pounds)? Any suggestions as to the most common case of misfeads will be appreciated. Thanks.

There is no single most common source of jams and stovepipes. After you have made sure your pistol is clean, I suggest you start with changing ammo to a different brand. That may cure the promlems. If not, then find someone with like pistols, someone who is having no malfunctions and try their clips in your guns. If the problems go away, you have found the problem to be with the clips. After that, go to te recoil springs and try a different ones.
Take one thing at a time, starting with the least expensive, and find the source of your problems by trial and error.

More thoughts on your problem: When you say stovepipe, I take it to mean the fired brass doesnt clear the ejection port but gets caught when the slide closes, with the empty end sticking up. If that is the case, it often is caused by weak ammo, too strong a recoil spring, or the ejector is not working right.
If you are having unfired rounds feed from the clip, past the chamber and get caught by the closing slide, that sounds like worn or bent magazine lips.

Actually, by "stovepipe" I mean the entire unfired bullet does not chamber in the barrel because it gets stuck sideways or standing up on its end on the way from the magazine to the barrel and it jams in the gun sideways or standing up. I have had no problems with ejecting empty shell casings. 0 -

From your second posting I'd say you may have a magazine problem. As stated eariler, make sure the pistol is clean. Is it just one mag or both?0 -
You might want to clean the magazine as accumulated crud can cause mis-feeds. Of course tired springs can certainly be the cause.
Regardless the timing of the pistol is off as you say that there are no ejection related problems which is a good indicatior that the slide is coming back w/ sufficient velocity and that the ejector is doing its' job too.
If you were firing hollow point, or SWC (which I've not seen in 9x18) and having problems with the nose hanging up I'd look at the ammo as a cause, but you've stated that the round is also turned (standing up) so that would suggest the problem is not ammo related.
Clean and lube the pistol and the magazines and try again. If you can borrow a known good magazine from a friend try that it the problem continues. If you can't borrow a mag. buy a new one as it never hurts to have an extra mag. even if that is not the problem. If the problem is still there you may be better served by having a gunsmith look the pistol over instead of tackling spring replacement.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
OK, I will look real close at my magazines. The gun is clean. I appreciate everyone's suggestions.

1ARM touched on it, but I will repeat a part of that because it helped my mag problems more than once. ....
Ya gotta be a LIP MAN. Minor changes in the amount of 'roll' on the lip, or some other 'length of rolled segment' has helped me fix more of my problem mags than anything. That is not to say that some did have spring problems, engagement problems, etc.
The thing that you CAN'T tolerate in your kids, and must be just right in your woman and your magazines..... lip characteristics.
If we do not hang together we will certainly hang separately.0
