rem 597 mag factory heavy vs standard bbl
am thinking of getting a rem 597 in .22 mag. have noticed two different barrels from the factory. a heavy bbl w/ laminate stock and a tapered bbl in a synth stock. am looking to punch paper and gophers. will either bbl be good out to 100 - 150 yds if i do my part? would add a 1/2 decent scope and a trigger job. any views on either barrel? thanks

The Heavy Barrel model is well worth the few extra bucks, If the rifle is to be used Mostly on the target range its perfect But if it
will be carried in the field you will notice the differnce between the two big time, If your Varmint hunting consists of just setting up
somewhere and not stalking the critters i would get the heavy barrel
if you plan on stalking any game for long periods of time get the standard barrel version, I own both models and they are very accurate and reliable rifles A great choice no matter which version you choose.

Heavy barrel model ... heck it ain't that heavy and I somehow think you'll spend more time on the range than in the field so put your money where it will show the most.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
i have a remington 552 bdl and a ruger 10/22 (both in 22lr.) with the 552 i have a normal barrel on it and the grouping isn't that great on it. and i just got the ruger 10/22 and love it it has the target "bull (or heavy) barrel" and it will shoot through one hole. another thing is to make sure that you properly brake in the barrel different people have different techniques. i prefer to shoot one or 2 rounds then clean the barrel and do that repeditivly for about 100 times or so. another thing is the ammo some guns favor different ammo it is best just to kinda go around and pattern different ammo's to see how they group. try to check from cheap bulk ammo all the way to target ammo.
